  • Contending Theories of Contentious Politics and the Structure-Action Problem of Social Order

    Mark I Lichbach, Mark Lichbach•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Political Science•1998•Cited by: 49•References: 42

To understand protest in America, one must understand protest and one must understand America. More generally, the study of resistance against authority may adopt two foci: authority (structure) and resistance (action). The leading practitioners of the structuralist approach to contentious politics—McAdam, Tarrow, and Tilly—have jointly systematized their ideas. This synthesis, which I call Synthetic Political Opportunity Theory (SPOT), exerts do…

  • The Rebel's Dilemma

    Open Access•Mark I Lichbach, Mark Lichbach•BOOK•The Rebel's Dilemma (Economics,…•1995

"Since the mid-1960s, theorists have elaborated over two dozen different solutions to the collective action problem. During much of this same period, students of conflict have explored many questions about protest and rebellion. The Rebel's Dilemma examines what happens when one brings the full richness of collective action theories to bear on the many complex problems of collective dissent." "The book develops a new typology of solutions to the …

  • What Makes Rational Peasants Revolutionary? Dilemma, Paradox, and Irony in Peasant Collective Action

    Open Access•Mark I Lichbach, Mark Lichbach•ARTICLE•World Politics•1994•Cited by: 63•References: 35

Peasant upheavals are studied from the perspective offered by the selective incentives solution to Olson's collective action problem. This article presents much evidence from three different forms of peasant struggles—everyday forms of peasant resistance, unorganized rural movements, and organized peasant rebellions—that demonstrates the widespread existence of selective incentives. Questions about the causes and consequences of selective incenti…

  • Rethinking Rationality and Rebellion: Theories of Collective Action and Problems of Collective Dissent

    Open Access•Mark I Lichbach, Mark Lichbach•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•1994•Cited by: 27•References: 39

This article rethinks the Rebel's Dilemma, or Collective Action (CA) problem in political dissent. The author argues that the marriage of CA theories and conflict studies has largely failed. To remedy this situation, a new typology of solutions to the CA problem is proposed. One set of solutions is based on the Market. Such solutions focus on changes in the parameters of the canonical model of CA. The other three sets of solutions are based on va…

  • Alternative Measures of Crime: A Statistical Evaluation

    Open Access•Larry J Cohen, Larry Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 10•References: 9

The purpose of this paper is to explore two alternative measures of “crime”: official incidence reports, compiled and published as the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), and citizen-defined victimizations, compiled and published as the National Crime Surveys (NCS). Six categories of crime are examined (auto theft, burglary, larceny, robbery, rape, and assault) for thirty-nine cities, and two categories (auto theft and robbery) are analyzed for ten othe…
