    Mark Lehrer, Sokol Celo•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 39

Family firms dominate the German economy statistically, employing over half of all employees in the private sector. Many German family firms were quiet beneficiaries of globalization and grew substantially in the past decades. Consistent with the notion that patient capital requires certain vectors of ‘engagement’ to ensure it functions in ways aligned with the interests of key stakeholders, we examine how engagement works at the local level of f…

  • The Making of an Homeric Archaeologist

Open Access•Mark Lehrer, David Turner•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1989

This paper, based on Schliemann's correspondence and on his travel diary of 1868, fills in an important gap regarding Schliemann's beginnings in archaeology. Schliemann's awakening interest in archaeological excavation is traced throughout his sojourn in Rome and Southern Italy, where Pompeii provided perhaps the decisive impetus for Schliemann's own first archaeological endeavours in Ithaca. Interesting differences between the diary and the publ…

  • Keller's Anthropological Realism

    Mark Lehrer•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1987

The so-called problem of Schein and Sein has been identified as a major thematic axis in the work of Gottfried Keller.' In an effort to elucidate the 'Anthropological Realism of Keller's early prose, I will argue that Keller's portrayal of the dichotomy of Schein and Sein reflects a scientific conception of human behavior in the context of nineteenth-century thought. Keller's intellectual premises crystallize in the novella Kleider machen Leute, …

    Mark Lehrer•ARTICLE•Seminar A Journal of Germanic…•1984

What Minna says of her beloved applies to Lessing himself: `Er spricht sehr oft von Oekonomie.' 1 Although money and money metaphors are fairly prominent throughout Lessing's dramatic work, economics makes a spectacular appearance in Minna von Barnhelm and Nathan der Weise, the canonized plays with which we will be most concerned. just what we are supposed to make of money's leading role has not yet been decided. The question of whether the omnip…
