High-resolution carbonate isotope records of Holocene soil water balance and ecosystem dynamics in northern Iran loess
Stable carbon isotopes in Holocene soils provide key insights into past climate and ecosystems. This study presents high-resolution isotope analyses of pedogenic carbonates and organic carbon from modern loess-derived soils in northern Iran across a strong precipitation gradient (150–850 mm mean annual precipitation [MAP]). Eight soil profiles span five soil orders: Alfisols, Mollisols, Inceptisols, Aridisols, and Entisols. The mean δ 13 Cpc valu…
Piping Erosion in Semi‐Arid Loess Hillslope
Piping erosion, driven by subsurface flow, has generally received less attention than soil erosion caused by overland flow. This oversight contributes to the growing global problem of soil degradation in various regions. Piping erosion can pose significant geohazards in areas covered by loess, such as the Iranian Loess Plateau (ILP), where it negatively impacts agricultural productivity and human properties. Consequently, identifying the factors …
Paleopedogenesis and paleoclimatic changes recorded at the Khonako II loess section, Khovaling Loess Plateau, Southern Tajikistan
Structure and properties of paleosols of the last two interglacial cycles of the Khovaling Loess Plateau, Tajikistan (Obi–Mazar section)
Significant thicknesses, a large number of paleosols, and an impressive chronological framework place the loess–paleosol series of the Afghan-Tajik depression on a par with the famous sections of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Based on the results of field stratigraphy, description of the macro- and micromorphological structure, field magnetic susceptibility measurements, and study of the chemical and grain-size compositions, a comprehensive characte…
Influence of Na-feldspar grains within the K-feldspar fraction on sediments IRSL dating
Geophysical sediment properties of a late Pleistocene loess–paleosol sequence, Chenarli, northeastern Iran
We present stratigraphic, magnetic, diffuse reflectance spectrophotometric analyses, and chronologic data for the Chenarli loess–paleosol sequence in northeastern Iran. Eight loess units (LU) are identified, described, and constrained in time based on relative stratigraphy and luminescence dating from >130 ± 9.1 ka to ~9.8 ± 0.7 ka. Our data indicate that pedogenic magnetite/maghemite formation gives rise to magnetic enhancement in modern soil an…
A loess-paleosol record of climate and vegetation change during the past 27,000 years from South-East of the Caspian Sea, Iran
The formation of iron oxides and magnetic enhancement mechanisms in northern Iranian loess-paleosol sequences
Quartz OSL dating of loess deposits since the late glacial in the Southeast of Caspian Sea
Loess records of environmental change
Pedogenic carbonates archive modern and past precipitation change – A transect study from soils and loess-paleosol sequences from northern Iran
Clay mineralogy and geochemistry of the Lower Pleistocene Loess in the Iranian Loess Plateau (Agh Band section) and implications for its provenance and paleoclimate change
Role of geomorphic surface on the above-ground biomass and soil organic carbon storage in a semi-arid region of Iranian loess plateau
Cyanobacterial diversity and toxicity of biocrusts from the Caspian Lowland loess deposits, North Iran
Micromorphology of the lower Pleistocene loess in the Iranian Loess Plateau and its paleoclimatic implications
Biomarkers in modern and buried soils of semi-desert and forest ecosystems of northern Iran
Grain-size distribution of Pleistocene loess deposits in northern Iran and its palaeoclimatic implications
Climatic interpretation of loess-paleosol sequences at Mobarakabad and Aghband, Northern Iran
Loess accumulation and paleosol formation are important Quaternary geoarchives in northern Iran. Two loess-paleosol sequences at Mobarakabad and Aghband were examined using soil morphology and micromorphology, mineralogy, magnetic susceptibility (MS), free Fe oxides and calcium carbonate equivalent. The loess-paleosol sequences provide a record of changes in paleo-rainfall in the northern Iran. Micromorphological and MS differences between the lo…
Loess-soil sequence at Toshan (Northern Iran)
Micromorphology and development of loess-derived surface and buried soils along a precipitation gradient in Northern Iran
Variations in soil properties as affected by deforestation on loess-derived hillslopes of Golestan Province, northern Iran
Deforestation and shift of land use to agriculture, is of great concern in Golestan Province and has brought hazardous problems of flooding, landslide and soil loss.Soil organic carbon, total nitrogen content, available phosphorous and potassium, calcium carbonate content, thickness of A horizons and some important soil properties were studied on forested soils and compared with the adjacent deforested and cultivated soils. The studied soils were …
