Re-bordering during Covid-19: Women and children as tools for immigration control at the USA-Mexico border
Through qualitative ethnographic work at the US-Mexican border, this article analyzes three main impacts of ‘crisis’ migration governance on migrant women with children during the COVID-19 pandemic. It illustrates how a combination of migration and public health-related policies employed during this time, and presented as measures for the public good and the wellbeing of migrant communities, generated chaos and resulted in additional forms of mis…

Conducting Research with Migrant Children Impacted by Humanitarian Violence at the U.S.–Mexico Border
This article reflects on the implications of conducting research in, with, and through border institutions tasked with the care of migrant populations, while simultaneously upholding the violent border regime that prioritizes security and migration restriction. We draw from our individual and collective experiences in these spaces of “conflicted care,” where “humanitarian violence,” including dehumanization and harmful rights violations, is norma…
The Cuerpo-Territorio of Displacement: A Decolonial Feminist Geopolitics of Re-Existencia
In this article we examine the root causes and consequences of forced displacement in Guerrero, Mexico. Drawing upon Latin American and Caribbean decolonial feminist thought, we use ‘cuerpo-territorio’ (body-territory) as a lens for understanding multiscalar violence in the region. This centres the experiences of women and children, key figures both in the (re)production of embodied, communal, and territorial ties and in the phenomenon of forced …
Lockdown and the list: Mexican refugees, asylum denial, and the feminist geopolitics of esperar (waiting/hoping)
Between 2018 and 2020, dramatic changes in US-Mexico policy transformed experiences of asylum on the border. Quotas on applications at ports of entry (known as "metering"), the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and the deployment of the pandemic era “lockdown” through Title 42, each severely limited asylum opportunities. In response, a host of informal waiting lists emerged, developed and were utilized by a binational network of non-governmental and gov…
