  • The effects of an information campaign beyond university enrolment: A large-scale field experiment on the choices of high school students

Open Access•Gabriele Ballarino, Antonio Filippin et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2022

  • Nudging gender desegregation: A field experiment on the causal effect of information barriers on gender inequalities in higher education

    Open Access•Carlo Barone, Antonio Schizzerotto et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 8

In this article, we propose and test a novel explanation for gender segregation in Higher Education that focuses on the misperceptions of economic returns to fields of study. We frame this explanation within the literature emphasizing the role of gender-stereotypical preferences and occupational plans, and we argue that counselling activities in school can play a crucial role in either reinforcing or countering the weight of these expressive mech…

  • Information barriers and social stratification in higher education: Evidence From a Field Experiment

Open Access•Giovanni Abbiati, Gianluca Argentin et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 24

Our contribution assesses the role of information barriers for patterns of participation in Higher Education (HE) and the related social inequalities. For this purpose, we developed a large-scale clustered randomised experiment involving over 9,000 high school seniors from 62 Italian schools. We designed a counseling intervention to correct student misperceptions of the profitability of HE, that is, the costs, economic returns and chances of succ…

  • Linking the macro to the micro: A multidimensional approach to educational inequalities in four European countries

    Open Access•E Bukodi, Ferdinand Eibl et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 20

Recent research into educational inequalities has shown the importance of decomposing social origins into parental class, status and education, representing economic, socio-cultural and educational family resources, respectively. But we know little about how inequalities in educational attainment at the micro-level map onto institutional characteristics of educational systems at the macro-level, if we treat social origins in a multidimensional wa…

  • Information Barriers, Social Inequality, and Plans for Higher Education: Evidence from a Field Experiment

Carlo Barone, Antonio Schizzerotto et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Our article assesses the role of information barriers for patterns of educational participation and related social inequalities in plans for Higher Education (HE). Using longitudinal data, we investigate student expectations about the profitability of HE, their evolution over time and their correlation with study plans among Italian high school seniors. We find that student believes are highly inaccurate, systematically biased and poorly updated.…

  • Career Mobility in Italy

    Open Access•Carlo Barone, Mario Lucchini et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 11

This article examines the role of social origins and education for career mobility in contemporary Italy by means of growth curves models. We find that opportunities for career advancement are rather limited and that risks of downward mobility are virtually negligible. Although this picture displays a noticeable degree of stability over time, a moderate increase of career fluidity across cohorts can be detected. Moreover, social origins and educa…

  • The Italian Mobility Regime: 1985–97

Maurizio Pisati, Antonio Schizzerotto•CHAPTER•Social mobility in Europe•2004

Analyses changes in the Italian social mobility regime over the period 1985 to 1997. First, it is shown that both men’s and women’s absolute rates of mobility have remained substantially stable during the period under analysis. Some changes did occur in relative mobility changes: on the one hand, the strength of the barriers separating the urban manual and non-manual classes has increased somewhat; on the other hand, the degree of viscosity of ag…

  • La mobilité sociale en Italie

    Antonio Schizzerotto, Maurizio Pisati•ARTICLE•The Tocqueville Review/La revue…•1998•Cited by: 2

  • The collective perception of occupational inequalities in contemporary Italy: Multidimensional Evaluations and Onedimensional Scales

    Hans M A Schadee, Antonio Schizzerotto•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•1987

Popular images of occupational structure in contemporary Italy, derived from free sorts andsimilarity judgements, are multi-dimensional and do not show socially structured variation. Images of occupational stratification, obtained from rankings, collapse the spontaneous images onto a single dimension. Both constructs are based on the same descriptive criteria. The occupational orderings vary according to the regions respondents inhabit. This resul…
