  • How Covid-19 has Affected Job Satisfaction Over Different time Horizons: A Multidimensional Analysis for Italy

Open Access•Gianluca Argentin, Ivana Fellini et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2025•References: 6

The coronavirus pandemic drastically disrupted societies, altering daily routines and affecting economies' and labor markets' functioning. In the short-term, the labor market experienced diverse impacts: many workers lost jobs or faced temporary suspensions, while others transitioned to remote work or faced increased workloads in pandemic-critical roles. Despite these deep and heterogeneous impacts, and negative outlooks and expectations regardin…

  • What are teacher relational skills? A defining study using a bottom-up modified Delphi method

    Open Access•Tiziano Gerosa, Gianluca Argentin et al.•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2024

Relational skills are an essential work-related tool for several professions, especially teaching. This specific domain of teacher competence is acquiring ever-increasing attention due to the connection between social and emotional aspects of education and student school success. Nonetheless, a persistent focus on content-related knowledge, didactic skills and digital literacy has generated uncertainties about what teacher relational skills effec…

  • Mobile media education as a tool to reduce problematic smartphone use: Results of a randomised impact evaluation

    Open Access•Marco Gui, Tiziano Gerosa et al.•ARTICLE•Computers & Education•2023

In recent years a public debate has been growing around mobile media and young people, as research has found adverse relationships between the intensive use of smartphones and well-being in this age group. However, there is still a lack of structured interventions targeting teachers and schools on the issue. This paper shows the results of a pre-registered cluster randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of a media education intervention…

  • Experimental Research in Education: An Appraisal of the Italian Experience

Open Access•Giovanni Abbiati, Gianluca Argentin et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2022

This work provides an assessment of the Italian experimental literature in the field of education. We review 25 RCTs completed between 2009 and 2020, analysing their alignment to the CONSORT guidelines. Our findings show that the scientific reporting is on average of good quality; however, there are areas where a significant improvement is needed. We suggest viable solutions, aimed at improving the robustness of experimental research in sociology…

  • The effects of an information campaign beyond university enrolment: A large-scale field experiment on the choices of high school students

Open Access•Gabriele Ballarino, Antonio Filippin et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2022

  • Under pressure?

  • Information barriers and social stratification in higher education: Evidence From a Field Experiment

Open Access•Giovanni Abbiati, Gianluca Argentin et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 24

Our contribution assesses the role of information barriers for patterns of participation in Higher Education (HE) and the related social inequalities. For this purpose, we developed a large-scale clustered randomised experiment involving over 9,000 high school seniors from 62 Italian schools. We designed a counseling intervention to correct student misperceptions of the profitability of HE, that is, the costs, economic returns and chances of succ…

  • Social origins, relative risk aversion and track choice: A field experiment on the role of information biases

    Open Access•Carlo Barone, Giulia Assirelli et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2018•Cited by: 22•References: 20

This study develops and tests the hypothesis that information biases concerning the perceived extent of risk of educational options fuel social inequalities in track choice. In particular, it is argued that low-educated families are more concerned than college-educated families with the risks of dropout in the academic track, even when their children perform well at school. Moreover, they overestimate the risks of low occupational outcomes associ…

  • Information Barriers, Social Inequality, and Plans for Higher Education: Evidence from a Field Experiment

Carlo Barone, Antonio Schizzerotto et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Our article assesses the role of information barriers for patterns of educational participation and related social inequalities in plans for Higher Education (HE). Using longitudinal data, we investigate student expectations about the profitability of HE, their evolution over time and their correlation with study plans among Italian high school seniors. We find that student believes are highly inaccurate, systematically biased and poorly updated.…

  • Male routes to a teaching career: Motivations, Market Constraints and Gender Inequalities

    Gianluca Argentin•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2013•References: 31

The aim of this paper is to contribute to our understanding of the gender influence on teaching choice. We analyze a large-scale national representative sample of Italian teachers. The choice to teach seems to be more a long-term pathway for women, following their personal values and interest in the intrinsic and altruistic values of teaching. Men, instead, show a more adaptable pattern of choice: chance and switching career played a relevant rol…

  • Digital skills of internet natives: Different forms of digital literacy in a random sample of northern Italian high school students

    Open Access•Marco Gui, Gianluca Argentin•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 5

This article outlines the main results and methodological challenges of a large-scale survey on actual digital skills. A test covering three main dimensions of digital literacy (theoretical, operational and evaluation skills) was administered to a random sample of 65 third-year high school classes, producing data on 980 students. Items include knowledge questions, situation-based questions and tasks to be performed online. A Rasch-type model was …
