Jennifer Farooq. Preaching in Eighteenth-Century London
The sermon has attracted considerable attention in recent years among historians of early modern England. Political sermons of the period of the American and French Revolutions have also been the focus of a number of studies. This book is a study of sermons in London from about 1700 to 1760. Sermons were preached each Sunday in hundreds of London churches and meetinghouses. They were also preached on weekdays, morning, noon, and night. The sermon…
Did the Subaltern Speak? Mayhew and the coster-girl
This essay focuses on some of Mayhew's interviews in London Labour and the London Poor, and especially his interview with one coster-girl. Do these sources express the lived experience of a speaking subject; or do they merely rehearse contemporary cultural and linguistic codes? There is no subject without language; language precedes and determines the subject, but nor is there language without subjects. Language exists only insofar as individuals…
Secular’ and ‘Religious’: Historical perspectives

Intestinal parasites among North Carolina migrant farmworkers
OBJECTIVES. The public health significance of intestinal parasitism among migrant farmworkers has been poorly defined. We report a three-part study in which we attempted to provide population-based estimates and identify risk factors for infection. METHODS. Parasite prevalence and incidence were estimated from two cross-sectional studies and a longitudinal study. We used questionnaires and clinical measurements such as hematocrits to examine risk…

Thinking Like a Mountain: Towards a Council of All Beings
This book of readings, meditations, rituals and workshop notes prepared on three continents helps us remember that environmental defence is nothing less than 'Self' defence. Including magnificent illustrations of Australia's rainforests, 'Thinking Like a Mountain' provides a context for ritual identification with the natural environment. It helps us experience our place in the web of life -- rather than at the apex of some human-centred pyramid. …

Gentlemen Dissenters: The Social and Political Meanings of Rational Dissent in the 1770s and 1780s
Conventional wisdom has long maintained that eighteenth-century religious dissent was a significant source of opposition to the Hanoverian status quo. For Trevelyan, for instance, dissenters were ‘vigilant champions of liberty and critics of government’. The high political visibility of rational dissenters in oppositional movements in the 1770s and 1780s – in opposition to the American war, the Test and Corporation Acts, slavery and the slave tra…
