Punishment
This article's central question is: ‘What can justify a system of criminal punishment?’ That question is familiar, but merits clarification. The article focuses on criminal punishment imposed by criminal courts for criminal offences. So narrow a focus, though typical of penal philosophy, requires justification. First, it ignores other kinds of punishment, formal and informal, imposed by other agencies: by institutions or professions, in the famil…
Sexuality
This article traces public debates about sexual practices that have found their way into recent philosophical and other academic publications. It examines the ideals and standards some ethicists have proposed for guiding our sexual lives, even those lived away from the public spotlight. Many debates about sex concern sexual practices that transgress long-standing sexual mores, practices such as extramarital sex, same-sex sex, and paid sex. Debate…
Gender and Sexual Discrimination
Sex discrimination is the disadvantaging of a member or members of one sex over a member or members of the other because of their sex. Although either men or women may be the victims of sex discrimination, throughout history and in most societies, women have been the victims. Discrimination against women is usually predicated on the claim that men and women are biologically different, and that these differences justify the lesser status of women.…
Immigration
This article addresses the ethical issues of immigration. It asks about the morality of admitting persons into (and out of) the state, for any of these reasons and under any of these conditions. Therefore, there may be no single answer about the morality of immigration — it will require taking positions on a number of different matters. What stance one takes will often depend upon — or shape — one's general views about the nature of the state.
Multiculturalism
Few ideas are as open to different interpretations these days, or as controversial, as multiculturalism. Like many other ‘isms’ — socialism, conservatism, fascism — multiculturalism is a political movement as well as a set of philosophical, social, and political ideas. Before looking at the range of positions associated with multiculturalism, this article first describes its historical origins and the social forces that came together to create it…

Honesty and Intimacy
Current professional and lay lore overlook the role of honesty in developing and sustaining intimate relationships. We wish to assert its importance. We begin by analysing the notion of intimacy. An intimate encounter or exchange, we argue, is one in which one verbally or non-verbally privately reveals something about oneself, and does so in a sensitive, trusting way. An intimate relationship is one marked by regular intimate encounters or exchan…
