Capitalism
A society is called capitalist if it entrusts its economic process to the guidance of the private businessman. This may be said to imply, firsts private ownership of nonpersonal means of production, such as land, mines, industrial plant and equipment; and, second, production for private account, i.e., production by private initiative for private profit. This chapter presents an outline of historical developments. It then discusses a summary of th…
Capitalism in The Postwar World
In the epoch of intact capitalism, law, custom, public opinion, and public administration enforced a certain amount of public planning, while in a society that had adopted the structural principles of socialism there was such a thing as Lenin&s;s New Economic Policy that left room for a certain amount of laissez faire . It follows that, public management or planning being never either absent or complete, our question concerning the immediate futu…
The Instability of Capitalism
The many &s;instabilities&s; created by the War and by post-war vicissitudes, whilst very properly engaging the attention of economists in all countries both as to diagnosis and as to remedial policy, do not, in themselves, present to science any new or startling problems. Capitalism may be stable or not, simply in the sense that it may be expected to last or not. The business man&s;s meaning of stability we have now to translate into the languag…

Another Theory of Democracy
Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy remains one of the greatest works of social theory written this century. When it first appeared the New English Weekly predicted that `for the next five to ten years it will cetainly remain a work with which no one who professes any degree of information on sociology or economics can afford to be unacquainted.' Fifty years on, this prediction seems a little understated. Why has the work endured so well? Schumpet…

Science and Ideology
Joseph Schumpeter (1883–1950) was born in Trietsch, Austria, and studied law and economics at the University of Vienna. He taught in Austria and Germany before coming to Harvard in the 1930s. The essay reprinted here was Schumpeter's presidential address to the American Economic Association in 1948. Schumpeter made major contributions to the understanding of economic growth and crises, and his History of Economic Analysis is perhaps the greatest …
Theorie der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung
Development
The present article introduces Development, a new, unpublished and hitherto unknown article by Joseph A. Schumpeter from 1932. Development is remarkable because it significantly adds to Schumpeter's known works on a number of issues that were central to his theory of economic development. Development shows that Schumpeter considered the explanation of novelty as the most important unsolved scientific problem. Schumpeter doubts the explanatory val…
Entrepreneur
The collective2 economic process is always a coherent phenomenon whose lines can be comprehended by the interlocking of its distinguishable elements. Not always, however, does the social whole – be it a modern nation or a “culturally poor” horde – run directly according to a comprehensive, conscious plan, carried out, for the whole, by the whole: Where this is the case – in a completely pure form, it would be in a socialist community – distinguis…

The Creative Response in Economic History
Economic historians and economic theorists can make an interesting and socially valuable journey together, if they will. It would be an investigation into the sadly neglected area of economic change. As anyone familiar with the history of economic thought will immediately recognize, practically all the economists of the nineteenth century and many of the twentieth have believed uncritically that all that is needed to explain a given historical de…
