Quantifying the burden of organisational bulk emails in a business school
This study critically examines the burden of organisational bulk emails sent to academics over one year at a business school, offering the first detailed quantitative measure of the time and financial cost associated with such emails in a higher education setting. A mixed-methods approach is employed to examine the issue. Using metrics such as silent reading time, recovery time between reading and returning to work, and current academic salary ra…
The role of emotion recognition in empathy
In the present investigation, we document the association between multimodal emotion recognition and state and trait empathy. We assessed participants' ( N = 342) capacities for emotion recognition-across 13 emotions expressed in the face, voice, and body-as well as their state- and trait-like empathic tendencies. Emotion recognition accuracy predicted greater state-like empathic responses to targets' expressions of emotions, as evident in higher…
How do cognitive and social factors shape learning? Unpacking the roles of procrastination, social disengagement, academic burden and prior knowledge
Despite significant investment in learning technologies to enhance student engagement and academic performance, universities face persistent challenges in achieving meaningful student participation through digital learning technologies. With the increased use of online technologies in the post-pandemic era, there is a renewed expectation for flexibility from students in how, when and where they learn. Prior studies have focused on the effects of …
The Prince of the Abrolhos, 2020-2023
This article examines the Houtman Abrolhos Micro Nation, established by Kristin MacDonald, a Western Australian man, in 2020. The article draws on media reports and documents prepared by the 'prince' in support of his legal claims. Notwithstanding a curious attempt to draw support from the neighbouring micronation of New Westralia, MacDonald's claims were quickly dismissed by the Geraldton Magistrates Court in 2023, and the micronation has ceased…

The metamorphosis of Madeira’s Ilhéu do Diego into Forte de São José and the short-lived Principado do Ilhéu da Pontinha
This article examines the serial transformation and resignification of a small islet off the coast of Madeira over the last 250 years. The first phase saw the Ilhéu do Diego modified into a fort (Forte de São José), linked to the mainland, and the second saw the fort incorporated into the seawall that forms the southern edge of the port of Funchal. The history of the fort area subsequently provided the pretext for its assertion as an independent …

The Royal Republic of Ladonia
© 2019, Shima Publications (Australia). The Royal Republic of Ladonia, the brainchild of artist Lars Vilks, is a micronation that advocates freedom of expression, supporting art and creativity. This article outlines Ladonia as the physical territory claimed in the Kullaberg peninsula in Sweden and the online community, where the government, nobles, and citizens gather. Ladonia coexists as both a physical territory and as a large and active online…
The Principality Of Hutt River
This article recounts the story of Hutt River Province, later established as the Principality of Hutt River (PHR), under the administration of Leonard George Casley (1970-2017). We highlight the international relations of the principality, its reliance on tourism, and its relationship with Australian taxation authorities. Casley created his own principality within the Western Australian outback and gladly marooned himself in his very own creation…
