    Open Access•J Hagan, Wenona Rymond-Richmond et al.•ARTICLE•Theoretical Criminology•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 4

It took criminology a long time to address some of its most important topics, for example, white-collar crime. It took criminology even longer to confront its more deadly neglected topics, namely genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Criminologists will first have to engage more fully and embrace the topic of genocide as also being among its own subject areas to develop. As criminologists venture forth into the territories of mass at…

Methods. The US State Department conducted the survey by interviewing a randomized multistage probability sample of 1136 Darfur refugees at 20 sites in Chad in 2004. For a subset of 932 respondents who had fled from vi…

  • The Collective Dynamics of Racial Dehumanization and Genocidal Victimization in Darfur

    Open Access•J Hagan, Wenona Rymond-Richmond et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2008•Cited by: 58•References: 53

Sociologists empirically and theoretically neglect genocide. In this article, our critical collective framing perspective begins by focusing on state origins of race-based ideology in the mobilization and dehumanization leading to genocide. We elaborate this transformative dynamic by identifying racially driven macro-micro-macro-level processes that are theoretically underdeveloped and contested in many settings. We investigate generic processes …

Nearly 400,000 Africans may have been killed in racially motivated, lethally destructive, state supported, and militarily unjustified attacks on the farms and villages of the Darfur region of Sudan. Using victimization survey data collected from Darfurian survivors living in refugee camps in Chad, and drawing on conflict theory, we present evidence that the Sudanese government has directly supported violent killings and rapes in a lethally destru…
