  • Fixing network failures? The contested case of the American Manufacturing Extension Partnership

    Philipp Brandt, Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2016•References: 34

The article uses a case study of the American Manufacturing Extension Partnership to explore economic and industrial policy in the contemporary USA. Extensive quantitative and qualitative data are mobilized to show that: (a) the agency is pressured politically to limit its activities to ‘blunt’ remedies for identifiable ‘market failures’; even as (b) regional centers in fact often orient also, and sometimes instead, toward ‘coordination-oriented’…

  • Waltzing, Relational Work, and the Construction (or Not) of Collaboration in Manufacturing Industries

    Open Access•Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2012•Cited by: 19

The article uses a case study of relationships in American manufacturing industries to demonstrate the utility of documenting the 'relational work' that managers do as they negotiate circumstances where either roles or norms are ambiguous. It shows that the explicit identification of the role that relational work plays in those relationships story militates for-and extends, improves upon, and arguably completes-a particular understanding of what …

  • The Anatomy of Network Failure

    Open Access•Andrew Schrank, Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Sociological Theory•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 67

This article develops and defends a theory of 'network failure' analogous to more familiar theories of organizational and market failure already prevalent in the literature on economic governance. It theorizes those failures not as the simple absence of network governance, but rather as a situation in which transactional conditions for network desirability obtain but network governance is impeded either by ignorance or opportunism, or by a combin…

  • Industrial Policy in the United States: A Neo-Polanyian Interpretation

    Open Access•Andrew Schrank, Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2009•Cited by: 25•References: 31

The conventional wisdom holds that U.S. political institutions are inhospitable to industrial policy. The authors call the conventional wisdom into question by making four claims: (1) the activities targeted by industrial policy are increasingly governed by decentralized production networks rather than markets or hierarchies, (2) 'network failures' are therefore no less threatening to industrial dynamism than market or organizational failures, (3…

  • Regional economies, open networks and the spatial fragmentation of production

    Josh Whitford, Cuz Potter•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 66

In this article, we review recent developments in the extensive literature on territorially embedded production systems in the developed world, with a particular eye towards changes that have (or have not) occurred over the last decade. Improvements in transportation and communication technologies and the advent of global production networks have put newly into play the degree to which industrial communities must be located in specific and discre…

  • The New Old Economy: Networks, Institutions, and the Organizational Transformation of American Manufacturing

    Josh Whitford•BOOK•The new old economy•2005

American manufacturing is in crisis: the sector lost three million jobs between 2000 and 2003 as the American trade deficit shot to record highs. Manufacturers have increasingly decentralized productive responsibilities to armies of supplier firms, both domestically and abroad. Many have speculated as to whether or not manufacturing is even feasible in the United States, given the difficulties. This book examines the issues behind this crisis, lo…

  • Surviving the Fall of a King: The Regional Institutional Implications of Crisis at Fiat Auto

    Open Access•Josh Whitford, Aldo Enrietti•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 20

This article discusses developments in the famously automotive-centered productive system in Turin and the surrounding Piedmont region in the wake of major crisis at Fiat Auto. This large, articulated and internationally competitive productive system emerged from interactions between Fiat, its suppliers and other regional actors, but has always had Fiat at its center in a directive role, as the sole actor with both the interest and the ability to…

  • Pragmatism and the untenable dualism of means and ends: Why rational choice theory does not deserve paradigmatic privilege

    Open Access•Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Theory and Society•2002•Cited by: 70

  • The decline of a model? Challenge and response in the Italian industrial districts

    Josh Whitford•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•2001•Cited by: 39•References: 4

The article presents an extensive critical review of recent debates on the restructuring of Italian industrial districts in the 1990s. It shows that, despite consensus on the empirical 'facts' of district restructuring, there remains extensive disagreement over appropriate public policies. This debate fundamentally turns on analysts' interpretations of how, or indeed whether, strong institutions and localized subcultures allow territorial network…
