Cool Guy or Doing Shirk: How Salafis Feel about Andrew Tate
Since Andrew Tate's conversion to Salafism, the emergence of manosphere enthusiasts and influencers in Salafi discourse has sparked considerable debate among Salafis. Questions arise, including whether Andrew Tate and similar figures can be seen as welcome advertising promoting Islam, or if they are perhaps not true Muslims. This snapshot presents the latest field data to explore how these topics are discussed in segments of the Germanophone sala…
What about a sister wife? Reasons for considering polygyny among Salafis in Switzerland
The article describes why some male and female Swiss Salafi converts support polygynous marriages. Against this background, it provides insights into how specific cultural models of partnerships that differ drastically from the majority society’s expectations can be managed. Swiss Salafis live in a society and legislative system that restrict polygynous civil marriage, especially religiously grounded polygyny. Drawing on Shore’s concept of cultur…

Silent Questions: (Not) Talking about Dying in the Pearl River Delta
This Field Notes contribution describes the difficulty of confronting the topic of dying in conversations with terminally ill persons in the Pearl River Delta region in the People's Republic of China (PRC), and how the ethnographer responded to this difficulty in a way she did not expect. While there is probably no ideal conversation starter for this subject anywhere in the world, bringing up the topic of approaching death is particularly challen…
Composing Ethnographic Texts. How to Use Stylistic and Argumentative Techniques Properly
Being a good ethnographer means, amongst other things, not forgetting the future reader during the writing process. This article discusses one possible approach for crafting reader-friendly ethnographies. I review basic strategies for creating stringent and straightforward texts, drawing on the journalistic canon of Reportage writing, and sketch how I personally apply or modify these techniques when composing an ethnography. I address elements su…

Interpretations of al-wala' wa-l-bara' in Everyday Lives of Salafis in Germany
Salafis' everyday lives, social relations, and attitudes towards both Muslims and non-Muslims are often shaped implicitly or explicitly by the theological concept of al-wala' wa-l-bara' ("loyalty and disavowal"). It indicates whom to be loyal to on the one hand, and whom to disavow on the other hand-or from which persons, deeds, and practices one should distance oneself. However, within the highly heterogeneous spectrum of Salafi orientations, be…
