The Transtheoretical Model of Change Applied to Developing Suicidal Behavior
The Transtheoretical Model of Change (TMC) is investigated as a tool for explaining and diagnosing suicidal behavior. Investigators found in a sample of 42 hospitalized suicide ideators and attempters, that most patients had progressed through the stages of change as predicted by the TMC, and that ten change processes (psychological states or experiences) defined by the TMC, were used systematically in association with specific stages of change. …

Cause and Correlation: One More Time
The distinction between correlational studies and correlational statistics is crucial to an understanding of the type of inferences that can be drawn from research. The complementary nature of correlational and experimental research in theory building is discussed

Correlational vs Experimental Research Strategies in Psychology
The issue of manipulation versus selection as a research strategy still seems to generate confusion. Present usage and past analyses of the issue are discussed. It is pointed out that the two approaches involve inferential problems at different points in the process of scientific generalization. Therefore, the strategies are complementary. Taken together, they can allow conclusions which neither alone could logically support

Behavior and Traditional Therapy Applied to Pedophiliac Exhibitionism: A Case Study
A 36-year-old male, who was hospitalized or imprisoned from the age of 12 yr. primarily for sexual deviancy, was treated with combined aversion, aversion relief, social and sexual skill training, and traditional support and insight-oriented therapy. The client's major symptom was pedophiliac exhibitionism both in compulsive practice and in almost constant obsession. At the conclusion of a 3-mo. therapeutic program (and after a 11⁄2-yr- follow-up)…
Effects of Depression and Target Status on Aggressive Responding
The aggressive responding (on a Buss “aggression” machine) of psychiatrically hospitalized depressives was compared with controls under two conditions. The conditions varied in that the aggression target was defined as high status (physician) in one and low status (orderly) in the other. There was no threat of retaliation in either condition. While there was no significant over-all main effect of depression, the aggressive response of the depress…
The Scandinavian Suicide Phenomenon: Fact or Artifact? Another Look
The well known differences in suicide rates among the European countries (especially the Scandinavian) are often explained as artifacts of statistical gathering and reporting. It is pointed out that the relative-rate differences reported by these countries obtain to a surprising (and reliable) extent in their immigrants to the United States where such statistics are gathered and reported by the same agents. It is suggested, therefore, that at lea…

Validation of Gilberstadt and Duker's 8–6 Profile Type on a Black Sample
The procedure employed by Gilberstadt and Duker (1965) with a Midwestern sample to determine the characteristics of the 8–6 MMPI profile type was replicated with a Southeastern black sample. The cardinal features of paranoid schizophrenia seemed remarkably similar in both groups but significant differences were found in traits, symptoms, and MMPI scale scores. In general, the Southeastern black sample showed a somewhat greater surface manifestati…
Sexual Differences in Physical Attractiveness as a Determinant of Heterosexual Liking
A questionnaire study of sexual differences in the importance of physical attractiveness to heterosexual liking disclosed that 177 men ranked physical attractiveness significantly (but only slightly) higher than 177 women. Different degrees of intimacy and permanency in the relationship also affected the importance of physical attractiveness in partners. There was no significant interaction between sex and type of relationship
A Negative Reaction
It is pointed out that the terminology commonly used in psychology to describe monotonic curves is ambiguous and somewhat inaccurate. An alternative set of terms which accurately describes both the direction of slope and the acceleration is suggested
Alpha waves—Artifacts
Kennedy has argued that alpha rhythm recordings are artifacts caused by the mechanical pulsation (choroid plexus pump) of a gel (the living brain) with different electrical potentials. This paper has been republished in a recent collection by Evans and Robertson. Kennedy's hypothesis seemed insufficiently supported, and contradicted the consensus concerning the origin of alpha waves which existed at the time. Significant recent research is examin…
Relation of Sexual Behaviors, Values, and Conflict to Avowed Happiness and Personal Adjustment
A questionnaire study of 68 male and 64 female college students inquired about sexual behaviors (a) experienced, (b) deemed acceptable on a date, (c) deemed acceptable if experienced previously by a fiance(e), (d) revealed to peers, and (e) revealed to parents. High scores on these measures were viewed as indicative of liberality and differences among them as indicative of conflict. These measures of sexual liberality and conflict did not correla…
Repetition, order of presentation, and timing of arguments and measures as determinants of opinion change
A model of order effects developed by Miller and Campbell (1959) predicts more recency with intervals between arguments and less recency with a delay of the posttest. To test the model, this study used 320 undergraduates as Ss, periods of 1 wk. as intervals and delays, and jury-trial excerpts as materials. Retention data supported the model completely. Opinion data showed less recency with delay (p<.01), as predicted, but did not show more recenc…

Much Ado About the Null Hypothesis
The Negative Outlook
The concept of a rejection vs acceptance-support design relates not to any objective characteristic of the experimental design but only to the Theoretical orientation of the investigator. If the theory of the investigator's choice predicts no differences, the design is an acceptance-support design
