Right to stay? Long-run experimental evidence on land formalization and widows’ tenure security in Benin
In many parts of the world, women’s land rights remain informal, leaving widows – especially those without a male heir – at high risk of losing access to their land and homes when their husbands die. We study whether large-scale land formalization programs can improve widows’ tenure security, using data from a randomized controlled trial in rural Benin. Four years after the intervention, widows in villages with land formalization were significant…
Do forest-management plans and FSC certification help avoid deforestation in the Congo Basin
To allow for the production of timber while preserving conservation values, forestry regulations in the Congo Basin have made Forest Management Plans (FMP) mandatory in logging concessions. This paper uses original high-resolution maps of forest-cover changes and official records on the activities of logging concessions to analyze the impact of FMP on deforestation in this region. We apply quasi-experimental and difference-in-difference approache…
Land certification and schooling in rural Ethiopia
Strong property rights have often been assigned a crucial role in economic development. Land certification programs are one way to address the problem of weak property rights. This paper investigates the impact of a rural land certification program on schooling in two zones of the Amhara region of Ethiopia. This is the first study on impacts of land titling on children’s schooling and labor in a rural context. Since land is productive in rural ar…
Formalization without certification? Experimental evidence on property rights and investment
Formalizing Rural Land Rights in West Africa
This paper presents early evidence from the first large-scale randomized-controlled trial of a land formalization program. The study examines the links between land demarcation and investment in rural Benin in light of a model of agricultural production under insecure tenure. The demarcation process involved communities in the mapping and attribution of land rights; cornerstones marked parcel boundaries and offered lasting landmarks. Consistent w…
