Marginalia and Ownership Notes
The study of Middle Eastern manuscripts requires an understanding of provenance, materials, and techniques, as well as the history and philosophies of the Middle East. The removal of many manuscripts from their context, along with transcription errors and language differences, creates barriers to understanding the origins and significance of traded manuscripts. This paper examines the methods for contextualising and attributing provenance to a co…

Narrating the preservation of a film school archive–Re-configuring the hero’s journey across the nexus of conservation and film production. In 2013, a program to secure the future of the more than 1800 films produced by students in the Victorian College of Arts’ Department of Film and Television commenced at the University of Melbourne. Access relative to need for community conservation funding in Australia
In a climate of scarce resources for heritage preservation, there is a need to develop principles and methodology for assessing and responding to inequity within the conservation sector. This paper focuses on spatial, or geographic, barriers as one factor determining the accessibility of conservation services. While the case study focuses on the conservation and management of collections of cultural material in Australia, the methodology is globa…
Roland Carter and Leonhard Adam
Focused around a 1929 publication of accounts of Ngarrindjeri history and culture provided by prisoner of war, Roland Carter, in Wünsdorf, Germany in 1918, to jurist and ethnographer, Leonhard Adam, this article examines the function of social connection, and dislocation, in the preservation of cultural heritage. In 1940, Adam was interned in Australia as an enemy alien. In 1947 the men briefly renewed contact, but, it seems, never met. This stor…
Recalibrating meaning and building context for collections of distantiated stone tools
Stone tool and other lithic material produced by Australian Aboriginal people has been collected as evidence to support a range of theoretical and practical constructions, including the development of European societies, and Aboriginal occupation and land use. In the middle of the twentieth century, Dr Leonhard Adam built a relatively small collection of lithic material at the University of Melbourne, sourced as gifts or sales from local collecto…
Has Aboriginal art a future?’ Leonhard Adam’s 1944 essay and the development of the Australian Aboriginal art market
This article examines how foresight, hindsight and perception are enabled, modified and compromised by competing intellectual traditions and by social and professional exigencies. Focusing on the example of one scholar, Dr Leonhard Adam, and his essay ‘Has Aboriginal art a future?’ this article charts the trajectory of this question from obscurity to celebration. It explores why such a significant question was unable to ignite debate, at a time w…
