Ice Witnesses
The key witnesses to the fact that climate change is anthropogenic are non-human. Ice cores, in particular, document that the current increase in atmospheric carbon levels is unmistakably due to industrial activities. In our article we discuss how the significance of ice is not restricted to its function as a scientific climate proxy but encompasses ice as a natural archive, an elemental medium and as a material climate witness. When ice enters p…
Tiefenzeitliche Erinnerungen in der anthropozänen Literatur
With the increasing interconnectedness of nature and culture in the Anthropocene, new narratives about humanity’s past, present, and future have been emerging. This is associated with a restructuring of cultural memory in the context of Earth history. To contribute to a better understanding of these changes, this paper takes recourse to approaches from Memory Studies. In a post-humanist extension of Memory Studies, the so-called archives of natur…

Narratives of Scale in the Anthropocene
The Anthropocene concept draws attention to the various forms of entanglement of social, political, ecological, biological and geological processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The ensuing complexity and ambiguity create manifold challenges to widely established theories, methodologies, epistemologies and ontologies. The contributions to this volume engage with conceptual issues of scale in the Anthropocene with a focus on mediated repr…
Aesthetics in a Changing World—Reflecting the Anthropocene Condition through the Works of Jason deCaires Taylor and Robert Smithson
This article focuses on an important aspect of aesthetics in the context of the Anthropocene: the situatedness of aesthetic techniques and operations within earth’s (changing) materiality. Aesthetics is not only a way of making sensible but also contributes ontologically to the world it makes sensible. In this view aesthetics does not rely on a subject’s capacity to apprehend the world as a perceptually objectifiable entity. Focusing on works by …
The technical non-reproducibility of the Earth system
The Anthropocene concept draws on a technologically mediated macroscale, allegedly all-encompassing perspective on the interconnectedness of planetary, social and cultural systems. It is thus part of a genealogy traceable to systems thinking and cybernetic imaginaries of planetary-scale controllability; but at the same time, it relies on a techno-scientific infrastructure that is part of the accumulation of technical entities which Peter Haff cal…

Ambivalent Characters and Fragmented Poetics in Anthropocene Literature
This essay discusses the value of the Anthropocene concept for the environmental humanities and in particular for the analysis of contemporary environmentally themed literature. The first part of the essay considers the culturally relevant consequences of the originally geographic Anthropocene concept, to filter out a heuristic for the analysis of literary texts. In the second part, this perspective is applied comparatively to two German-language…
Stereotype Paradiese
The South Seas play a major part in 19th century German literature and journalism, where they figure as a paradise representing the object of desire, research, and colonial conquest. This book demonstrates that literature on the South Seas displays an almost uniform repertory of exoticizing and fear-mongering stereotypes of the foreigner and things foreign that served various different purposes (esthetic standards, political aims, popularization …
