How can we think and live with vegetal life in uneven urban environments? The paper traces vegetal relations in the streetscapes of Coimbatore, a city that was undergoing urban change through the growth paradigms of smart datafication and beautification. • A sociology of vegetal life: Rethinking 'harmony' and 'nativism' in Miyawaki forests

    Open Access•Charrlotte Adelina•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2025

In this essay, I trace the genealogy of the 'Miyawaki forest' or 'Tiny Forest' concept by unpacking Akira Miyawaki's treatises on natural vegetation and situating it within Zürich-Montpellier school of phytosociology. By examining the maxims and techniques adopted in…

Recognising the pressures that public spaces are under in rapidly changing cities of the Global South, it is critical that research i…

To ensure future sustainability, cities need to consider concepts of livability and resident wellbeing alongside environmental, economic and infrastructure development equity. The current rapid urbanization experienced in many regions is leading to sustainability challenges, but also offers the opportunity to deliver infrastructure supporting the social aspects of cities and the services that underpin them alongside economic growth. Unfortunately…

  • Urban food insecurity and its determinants: A baseline study of Bengaluru

    Open Access•Shriya Anand, Keerthana Jagadeesh et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

There is an increasing need to study urban food security in the global South. This is because of the monetization of food in urban areas and compounding vulnerability from other deprivations such as lack of access to infrastructure. We assess these claims in this paper, based on a city-wide household survey in Bengaluru (Bangalore) carried out in 2016 that used experiential measures of food security like the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale…
