Deviant Behavior: Crime, Conflict, and Interest Groups
Using the framework of interest group conflict, this text combines a balanced, comprehensive overview of the field of deviance with first-hand expertise in the workings of the criminal justice system. Deviant Behavior, Seventh Edition, surveys a wide range of topics, from explanations regarding crime and criminal behavior, measurement of crime, violent crime and organizational deviance, to sexual behavior, mental health, and substance abuse. This…

Envelope stuffing at home: A quasi confidence game
A common consumer fraud is the work‐at‐home scheme which promises substantial earnings from “stuffing envelopes” in one's home. The purposes of this research were to describe this scheme in detail and to analyze the process by which the scheme persists. Upon purchasing materials advertised in National Enquirer the researchers found that the principal plan being sold involves a pyramid: those answering ads buy materials encouraging them to adverti…

The Stigma of Dying: Attitudes toward the Terminally Ill
The objective of this study is to explore whether the terminally ill role is conceptualized as disvalued. Using a range of semantic differential adjectives, 233 college students indicated their attitudes toward young and old people who were healthy, ill, or terminally ill. Analysis of mean scores, Pearson correlations between summary scores, and factor analyses of the underlying pattern of response, support the following conclusions. First, withi…

Auto THEFT Offender and Offense Characteristics
Few empirical studies describe auto thieves. The most influential and frequently cited research is that by Wittenberg and Blusterier who characterize auto theft as a “favored‐group” delinquency. The findings of the present study challenge this conclusion. Although the majority of those arrested for auto theft are white. blacks are disproportionately represented; most thieves come from lower‐class neighborhoods: and the distribution of juvenile th…

Respondents' Intrusion Upon the Situation: The Problem of Interviewing Subjects with Special Qualities
Researchers have long been aware that when they become part of the system they are investigating, their own behavior may affect the behavior they wish to study. Little data has been collected on the effect of respondents on the researcher and the consequences of this on the research process. The problem is described and analyzed in this paper. We contend that respondents who have special qualities may intrude upon the researcher's role and make i…

Stripteasers: The Anatomy and Career Contingencies of a Deviant Occupation
The initiation of and commitment to deviance involves an interaction between the characteristics of the individuals, their experiences, and a number of situational conditions. Thus becoming deviant is a process which includes a series of “career contingencies” on which completion of the process depends. This paper concerns stripteasing, an occupation in which women earn their living by removing their clothes in a titillating fashion before paying…

Lesbian Behavior as an Adaptation to the Occupation of Stripping
Simon and Gagnon have drawn attention to the importance of linking patterns of homosexual behavior to nondeviant behavior or roles. A complementary perspective is suggested wherein the choice of sexual object is influenced by structural factors, as appears to be the case in the total institutional setting. Some occupations may provide conditions to which homosexual behavior emerges as an adaptation. Stripping appears to be such an occupation in w…

Drinking and Deviance Disavowal: The Case of Child Molesters
This report investigates how some persons convicted of sexual offenses against children explain these offenses. Explanations involving denial or drinking of alcohol are found to be related to a dissociation from others who molest children. This “deviance disavowal,” which is an attempt to sustain an identity as “normal,” is currently discouraged in the treatment process which many molesters must undergo. It is suggested that such disavowal may re…
