Crafting a Global Capital. The shifting territories of alcohol in Abu Dhabi
The place of alcohol in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, has undergone fast-paced changes over the last decade. While drinking was initially restricted to hotels, it is now possible to engage in this practice publicly; and alcohol has become central within the new leisure and entertainment districts. This paper argues that such evolutions reflect shifting representations of alcohol in the state’s discourse. Whereas it had first bee…

Girls’ Fashion and Khaleeji Pop Culture: The cultural fortunes of the gambūʿa, from hairdo to Internet meme
In the late 2000s, the gambūʿa, a beehive-style hairdo, made its apparition in the cities of the Arab Gulf. Sported by young women and characterized by a large hump above the head, it gave the impression of long and voluminous hair under the veil. The extravagant height of the hairdo and its association with the consumerist environment of Khaleeji commercial spaces soon made it the object of various condemnations. As the gambūʿa started declining…
Introduction: Ethnographic Perspectives on Cosmopolitanism in the Gulf: State Narratives, Individual Trajectories and Transnational Connections
This introduction offers a general framework to this Special Section which aims to unpack the ambivalences of cosmopolitanism in the Gulf region. It argues that cosmopolitanism is a heuristic concept for the critical analysis of extreme urban diversity in non-Western, non-democratic contexts. Indeed, it acts as a tool for exploring the tensions between logics of exclusion –– underlined by policies that maintain foreign residents outside of the ci…
Cosmopolitanism in exclusionary contexts
Although over time mass migration has brought about de facto cosmopolitan situations in Gulf cities, foreign residents continue to experience segregation and endure exclusionary policies and practices on a daily basis. This article unpacks two sets of internal tensions that characterise cosmopolitanism in the Gulf, through a comparison of cosmopolitan discourses and practices in Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah. The first tension relates to official …
Abu Dhabi is my sweet home’: Arab youth, interstitial spaces, and the building of a cosmopolitan locality
In Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, foreign residents constitute more than 88% of the population. This demographic situation is the result of both massive flows of labor migration following the advent of the oil wealth in the late 1960s, and practical limitations in the attribution of nationality which prevent foreign residents from gaining citizenship. This paper offers a look at migration in the Gulf through a different angle…
Urban Images and Imaginaries: Gulf cities through their representations
A falcon lands graciously on a man’s arm in the desert, and the video fades into a bird’s eye view of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. A white sail then occupies the screen, flickering in the wind; the camera zooms out to a glimpse of a man navigating a dhow; another zoom‐out, and in the background appears Burj Al‐Arab, the Dubai luxury hotel whose architectural shape, designed by renowned international firm W. S. Atkins, is meant…

State-Society Relations in the Arab Gulf States
This book examines the strategies and dynamics through which state-society relations in the Arab Gulf region have been cultivated, and explores the alternative political, social, economic and popular changes that threaten these relations. The work focuses on understanding how state sovereignty has been shifting to accommodate internal social, cultural, and intellectual forces and how these forces have managed to balance social and political power…
