  • Culture Trumps Class and Place: How the Populist Radical Right Thrives on Sociocultural Conflicts in Western Europe

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli, Gianluca Piccolino•ARTICLE•Government and Opposition•2026

Using original survey data from seven Western European countries, this article investigates which social conflicts populist radical right parties (PRRPs) represent. Methodologically, it innovates by measuring individuals’ positions within conflicts combined with the importance they attach to them, capturing both attitudinal alignment and salience. The analysis tests whether traditional cleavages or new conflicts related to globalisation and cultu…

  • Quality of Life and Populist Radical Right Attitudes: Evidence from Italy

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli, Giuliana Pinto•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2025•References: 35

Fitting into the literature on the geography of the populist radical right (PRR), we investigate how places’ quality of life (QOL) correlates with PRR attitudes and voting behaviour in Italy. We built a dataset by merging the QOL measure from the 24 ORE Group with the 2022 ITANES (Italian National Election Studies) survey. Using this merged dataset, our multilevel regression models reveal that (1) both lower and declining QOL are substantively as…

  • Bringing Rokkan into the twenty-first century: The cleavage structure of Western Europe

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli, Vincenzo Emanuele•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2025•Cited by: 9•References: 54

Political science is revitalising cleavage theory by examining the possible demise of traditional Rokkanian cleavages or the rise of a new globalisation cleavage. However, studies rarely combine these perspectives within a single framework, leading to inconsistent criteria for evaluating old and new cleavages. Additionally, whether contemporary societal conflicts generate collective identities remains unclear due to insufficient survey data. As a…

  • Not really concerned? Populist radical right voters and climate change

    Mirko Crulli, Mattia Zulianello•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2025•References: 61

Despite the increasing attention to the relationship between populist radical right (PRR) parties and environmental issues, we still know little about the demand-side of the phenomenon. Are PRR voters less concerned about climate change than the others? If so, what moderates the relationship? We address these questions using recent European Social Survey data (2020–22) from 22 EU-OECD countries. The analysis indicates three main findings. First, …

  • Thin or thick? Populist and radical right politics across European cities, suburbs, and countryside

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli•ARTICLE•Comparative European Politics•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 29

The surge of populist and radical right phenomena reshaped European political geography. Yet the connections between places of residence and populist or radical right politics tended to be neglected until recently. This paper addresses the gap by exploring how residency relates to support for populism and the radical right in contemporary Europe. Focusing on the distinction between ‘cities’, ‘towns–suburbs’, and ‘countryside’, I conduct an indivi…

  • The ‘mainstream’ in contemporary Europe: A Bi-Dimensional and Operationalisable Conceptualisation

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli, Daniele Albertazzi•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2024•Cited by: 15•References: 16

The aim of this article is twofold. Firstly, it offers a new definition of ‘mainstream’. Moving beyond understandings of the concept that focus exclusively on parties’ alternation in power, or their ideology/message, the article’s conceptualisation considers both supply and demand sides of politics. Hence, an attitudinal component to functional definitions is added. This implies that, to be called ‘mainstream’, certain attitudes must be shared by…

  • Contextual factors, transnationalism attitudes, and support for GAL-TAN parties within European metropolises: Insights from London

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 31

European democracies are moulded by a ‘transnational cleavage’ between green-alternative-libertarian and traditionalist-authoritarian-nationalist parties and attitudes. The territorial reverberations of this new cleavage are still scarcely analysed. Therefore, this article aims to explore how the transnational cleavage relates to political opinions and choices at the local level, by uncovering connections between such cleavage and the characteris…

  • The urban roots of populism: Mapping and explaining populist strongholds within major Italian cities (2013–2022)

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli, Giuliana Pinto•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 22

The impact of local contexts on populist voting patterns is receiving more attention, after being initially underestimated in the research literature. Populist support tends to be concentrated in areas ‘left behind’ or ‘that don’t matter’, but we still lack an accurate understanding of (1) the locations of these places within major cities and (2) what characteristics of urban contexts prompt the populist vote. We aim to bridge this gap by analysi…

  • Unmet expectations? The impact of the Coronavirus crisis on radical right populism in North-Western and Southern Europe

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This article investigates the state of health of the populist radical right in North-Western and Southern European democracies after the outbreak of the pandemic. The research question is whether the Coronavirus crisis represents an enemy or an ally of populist radical right (PRR) parties in these European regions. The thesis put forward is that a priori, based on the copious literature of political sociology and political science on populism, th…

  • The three faces of a populist party: Insights into the organizational evolution of the Five-star Movement

    Mirko Crulli•ARTICLE•Contemporary Italian Politics•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 21

The Italian populist party, the Movimento Cinque Stelle (Five-star Movement, M5s), has experienced significant organizational changes, each of which has marked a different phase of its development. We can identify four phases: the gestation phase (2009–2012); its entry into Parliament (2012–2017); the first experience of government (2017–2019); the transformation into a ‘state-centred’ party struggling with endless organizational restyling (2019-…

  • Vote metropolitanization after the transnational cleavage and the suburbanization of radical right populism: The cases of London and Rome

    Open Access•Mirko Crulli•ARTICLE•Quaderni dell Osservatorio…•2022•Cited by: 5

Voters’ division into opposing territorial blocs seems to be a noticeable feature of current European electoral politics, as mainstream traditional-left parties remain entrenched in the ‘centers’ and challenger parties of the populist Right surge in the ‘peripheries’. This electoral dynamic appears to affect especially the metropolitan areas, where inner districts represent the bastions of cosmopolitanism, while the outer ones the realm of ethnon…
