    Open Access•Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2025•References: 12

According to the culture‐based development (CBD) paradigm, studies culture as the code of attitudes on how to value the world. CBD handles the local cultural complexity by meaningfully reducing this complexity to two components—cultural heritage (CH) and living culture (LC). CH encompasses the attitudes valuing the “I” local inherited identity, celebrating itself as an insider winner. LC encompasses the attitudes that celebrate the “we” adaptive …

  • Cultural gravity and redistribution of growth through migration: Cohesion lessons from spatial econometrics and topological data analysis

Open Access•Annie Tubadji, Simon Rudkin•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2024•References: 10

Cultural Gravity is defined as the power of the cultural milieu of a locality to attract immigrants. We test the impact of Cultural Gravity on the spatial clustering and productivity of culturally diverse migrants throughout the European Union. We add to the literature in two ways. First, we clarify the position of the notion of Cultural Gravity within the urban economics literature on moving centres of economic gravity, spatial frictions, and re…

  • You'll never walk alone: Loneliness, religion, and politico‐economic transformation

    Open Access•Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2023•References: 15

The rise of subversive religious beliefs has been recently documented as related to the politico‐economic radicalization of places that feel left behind. When is the traditional local religious institution so socio‐economically inefficient in providing hope for “not walking alone” to become substituted by subversive religious beliefs on the market for hope? This article suggests a detailed methodology, linking micro and macro levels, that starts …

  • Culture and mental health resilience in times of Covid-19

    Open Access•Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 19

This paper aims to clarify the role of culture as a public good that serves to preserve mental health. It tests the evolutionary hypothesis that cultural consumption triggers a microeconomic mechanism for the self-defense of mental health from uncertainty. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a natural experiment of cultural consumption under increased uncertainty. Using primary data from a pilot survey conducted online during the pandemic and applying P…

  • Cultural capital and income inequality across Italian regions

Annie Tubadji, Masood Gheasi et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Historic cultural institutions are known to predict local inequality, but the moderating effect of modern cultural attitudes has not been thoroughly elucidated. Our hypothesis is that local inequality is determined by a moderating mechanism based on the balance between cultural heritage and living culture. We use a unique panel dataset for Italian regions, covering the period 2007–16, and observe that regional inequality decreases where cultural …

  • Cultural hysteresis, entrepreneurship and economic crisis: An analysis of buffers to unemployment after economic shocks

Annie Tubadji, Peter Nijkamp et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Entrepreneurship has been advocated as one of the major solutions for coping with (youth) unemployment in Europe during the recent economic downturn. Entrepreneurial activity is generally co-determined by economic and cultural factors. However, cultural change normally requires a much longer time to take place than economic changes do. This may prompt a so-called cultural hysteresis effect in the efficiency of entrepreneurial incentives. To analy…

  • Cultural Gravity Effects among Migrants: A Comparative Analysis of theEU15

    Open Access•Annie Tubadji, Peter Nijkamp•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 78

This article introducescultural gravityas a concept that serves to better disentangle the direction and magnitude of the effects from migration, which is controversial in recent literature. The aim is to test for cultural gravity effects on both the geographic concentration and human capital productivity of immigrants in the EU15 countries. Operationally, we proceed to construct an empirical cultural gravity measure and test it with the use of a …

  • Culture-based development - culture and institutions: Economic development in the regions of Europe

    Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•International Journal of Society…•2013

This inquiry seeks to provide a comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding the role of culture in economic growth. Economic growth theory has recognised labour and physical capital as primary economic inputs; plugging in additional variables related to human capital and entrepreneurship gives rise to the further developed endogenous growth models. Based on multidisciplinary theory and evidence, the present inquiry argues that these basi…

Design/methodology/approach The paper overviews the culture based development (CBD) concept and its precise definition of culture as an encompassing socio‐economic factor. The outlined CBD mechanism of impact is expressed in a testable empirical model. Alternative approaches for operationalizing the CBD definition of cultural capita…

  • The Creative Class, Bohemians and Local Labor Market Performance: A Micro-data Panel Study for Germany 1975–2004

Joachim Möller, Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2009

The paper aims at testing Florida’s concept of the Creative Class using panel data for 323West German regions for the time period 1975-2004. Applying a dynamic system approach based on GMM, we find that the local concentration of the Creative Class has predictive power for the economic development of a region and tends to outperform traditional indicators of human capital. However, our results do not support Florida’s assertion that the creative …
