  • Strength is relevant: Experimental evidence of strength as a marker of commitment

    Open Access•Kira Boulat, D Maillat•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2023

When relevance theory tried to express the underlying processes involved during interpretation, Sperber and Wilson posited a process of context elaboration in which interpretation is seen as a path of least effort leading to the selection of a set of most salient contextual assumptions and implications. In this view, contextual assumptions are not randomly scattered in the hearer's cognitive environment during this context elaboration process. In…

  • On the manifestness of assumptions: Gaining insights into commitment and emotions

    Open Access•D Maillat•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2023

Right from the outset, relevance theory ( Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995 ) tried to define interpretation as a process of context elaboration. Interpretation is seen as a path of least effort leading to the selection of a set of most accessible assumptions. One of the central aspects of this context elaboration process lies in the fact that contextual assumptions are not randomly scattered in the hearer’s cognitive environment. Instead, relevance t…

  • Getting your inferences in order: Limiting variability in pragmatic inferences

    Open Access•D Maillat•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This paper offers a theoretical survey of the kind of constraints posited by Relevance Theory to tackle variability in inferential processes. Focusing on inferences about speaker knowledge, it is argued that this type of inference has an impact on a great variety of other inferential process. As a consequence, any model that does not give priority to these inferences runs the risk of generating unintended interpretations and of forcing the system…

  • Production, motivation and immersion education: Some recent swiss data

    Open Access•D Maillat•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de Linguistique…•2022

In this paper, I will be looking at some recent data collected in Switzerland in connection with an ongoing programme funded by the Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique, which coordinates a variety of parallel research projects under the general heading of Diversité des langues et compétences linguistiques en Suisse. The present study is derived from a project which focuses on the complex network of relationships which obtain betwee…

  • Relevance Theory

    Open Access•D Maillat•CHAPTER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2016

Relevance theory is a theoretical model of human communication that focuses specifically on aspects of meaning construction and interpretation. It belongs in the field of linguistic pragmatics and brings the insight of language studies together with those of cognitive sciences. Relevance theory provides an empirically testable model of the inferential processes that determine meaning in context. Its explanatory power has been used to cover numero…

  • Immersion education and cognitive strategies: Can the obstacle be the advantage in a multilingual society

    D Maillat, Cecilia Serra•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper focusses on the teaching of non-linguistic subject matters in a second or third language through bilingual education. We investigate how this specific educational framework influences the development of linguistic competence as well as disciplinary knowledge. Based on a large-scale corpus of classroom interactions collected in bilingual education programmes in multilingual Switzerland and touching on various disciplines (biology, histo…

  • Service Activities and Regional Development: Some European Examples

    Open Access•A S Bailly, Antoine Bailly et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1987•Cited by: 11•References: 8

Two general issues relating to the nature of the service sector are addressed in this paper. The first concerns the growing interdependence between the secondary and tertiary sectors, largely a function of the increased use of service functions in the manufacturing process; these service inputs may be either internalized or externalized by a manufacturing firm. The second issue concerns the role of the service sector in promoting regional economi…
