Subculture
This entry on subculture discusses the origins and evolution of eleven distinctive regional subcultures that define the American cultural landscape. It links them to the original settler and immigrant waves that have come to the United States and then discusses how they define state cultures and influence the performance of state and local government. A cultural mapping of the regional subcultures is also provided.

The Changing Regional Subcultures of the American States and the Utility of a New Cultural Measure
This study analyzes changes in the regional subcultures of the United States using 2000 census and religious survey data. The results suggest a remarkable degree of continuity with those the authors identified in an earlier study. In addition, they demonstrate that a new multidimensional measure of state culture does a much better job in predicting social and political behavior than other frequently used indicators. Regional Subcultures of the United States
This study develops the case, theory, and statistical methodology for a new measure of American regional subcultures. Using principal component and cluster analysis on some 45 measures of racial origin, ethnic ancestry, religious affiliation, and social structure, I show how the entire population of U.S. counties can be partitioned into 10 distinctive, regional subcultures that are relatively homogeneous and contiguous. The Political Dynamics of Urban Voting Behavior
This study analyzes the dynamics of urban voting behavior and the worth of different political credentials in council elections. Data for the analysis are drawn from Cincinnati, Ohio, a city whose electoral system is representative of the majority of American cities of over 25,000 population that currently employ nonpartisan, at-large elections
Does Time of Voting Affect Exit Poll Results
This study analyzes time of voting effects on the results of exit poll data collected in a Cleveland municipal tax referendum. The data reveal significant differences both in the times different groups vote and in the reported levels of support for the tax levy by time of day. The temporal variation in the reported levels of support for the tax levy are then shown to be directly related to the times when different support groups cast their ballot…

Group Disorders in Urban Schools
This paper formulates and tests a causal model of racial violence in the public schools using data from a sample of 119 American cities. The results tend to support three conclu sions regarding the outbreak of school disorders during the latter 1960s. This article analyzes the social and political conditions associated with the incidence of racial violence in a sample of 119 American cities.
