Avoiding the (tourist) gaze
The making of Micro-district II, a digital film made by the author in the edgelands of Tbilisi, Georgia, is used as a vehicle for exploring the tourist gaze and the observer’s paradox amongst ethnographic filmmaking methods and documentary modes of observation. The observer’s paradox describes how the receiver of the gaze may become influenced through the processes of being observed, altering the quality of observing ‘naturalistic’ events. The to…
A Creative Ethnography Approach
Drawing on visual elements, this article uses creative ethnography as a method of visualizing imaginative elements and observations. Generating improvised dialogues based on the visual prompts of the author’s video entitled Ghost Ships of Suva, the technique explores and speculates on the imagined lives of sailors and workers who once inhabited the abandoned fishing vessels that were filmed in the Fijian island of Viti Levu. The material life of …
DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Electronics, Coin-Operated Relic Boxes and Techno-Animist Shrines
The author uses creative practice and DIY electronics as the vehicle for a practice-led inquiry into the similarities between techno-animism and material agency. Combining technology with aspects of magic and religion, techno-animism is an emerging concept in postmodern anthropology used to discuss the sentient agency of objects and materials within the context of modern technological societies. This combination of seemingly disparate fields of k…
The Liquid Midden
Following the trail of an urban waste canal in Cambodia, we engage with the sensory impressions of discarded material imprints as entangled within the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants. The term “liquid midden,” introduced here, implies the smooth movement and flow of discarded materials in the canal, and is used to explore the entangled visual relationships between discarded supermarket packaging, the canal’s concoction of household chemical…
Community of difference
The Bingodisiac Orchestra, a nomadic improvised community music project without fixed membership, is explored in this article as a case study examining the ‘open participatory’ aspects of Do-it-Yourself (DiY) sound culture. Established by the researcher in 2002, the ‘orchestra’ is an audio-visual event that attempts to break down barriers between diverse musical forms while also engaging in various strategies to maximize the interaction between a…
Maker Culture and DiY technologies
The emergence of ‘Maker Culture’ and ‘Maker Spaces’ within formal (and informal) learning environments around the world can be seen as part of a wider shift in consciousness regarding the relationship between human and the material environment. This is reflected in theoretical and academic movements such as the ‘material turn’: where concepts such as Jane Bennett’s ‘vibrant matter’ and Karen Barad’s ‘intra-activity’ have begun to displace human i…
The Construction of Karen Karnak
The context of this article is the changes in authorship that have occurred within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia. The mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture, compared with that of a Read/Only tradition, is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such represents new functions and attributes. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of th…
