‘She Is Not A(lone) Warrior on the Battlefield’
This article analyses a wartime feminist publication, Zhenskaia Pravda (Women's Truth), founded by the Feminist Anti-War Resistance shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. We examine the publication as an activist do-it-yourself newspaper and a contemporary version of Soviet samizdat . We explore how, in its 41 issues, it speaks to the intended Russian female readers and, we suggest, invites them to take part in anti-war ac…
Feminist expertise and the political work of building alternative futures
Sociological discussions on alternative futures have proliferated in recent years, yet the role of professional labour and expertise in building transformative social change remains underexplored. This article provides an original contribution by introducing the concept of transformative expertise, enabling a new framework that bridges the sociology of futures with feminist debates on expertise. Drawing on unique empirical data from interviews wi…
Political Imagination and Social Change
This Introduction to the special issue 'Political Imagination and Social Change' addresses the role of political imagination for transformative politics and social change. It argues that sociology has a critical role to play in analysing, theorising, and facilitating political imagination and contributing to reinvigorating the collective political imagination by offering insights to envisaging alternative social formations and destabilising conve…
Stimulating Political Imagination With Arts-Based Methods
In this article, we identify ways to methodologically stimulate political imagination in sociological research by exploring an art concept called 'utopia consultation' and related arts-based exercises. We investigate how political imagination can be stimulated and practised through arts-based research methods in sociology, and what tangible tools arts-based research offers for studying the intangible. Our analysis builds on recent work on utopia,…
Feminist Politics in Neoconservative Russia
Feminist Politics in Neoconservative Russia
In this book, the author provides an ethnographic account of feminist activism and politics at the grassroots level in neoconservative and increasingly authoritarian Russia in the 2010s. Feminist politics is interrogated from a broad perspective, encompassing both overt and covert forms of resistance, and local and global influences behind feminist action. The author analyses how a new feminist generation that emerged in the early 2010s chose fem…
Treading the tightrope of femininity
This article examines the therapeutic self-transformation process in a self-help group in Russia. Drawing on participant observation and interviews, and engaging with debates on therapeutic technologies and the transformation of gender relations, it explores how the self-help group shapes how participants come to understand and act upon themselves. It shows that the process of self-transformation is profoundly gendered, problematising femininity …
Smashing containers, queering the international through collaging
This article explores the potential of collage epistemology to cultivate queer intellectual curiosity about international relations. It argues that collaging and queering share many points of departure: in both, objects are taken from their conventional contexts and assembled into new relational constellations. The article draws from pedagogical work where collages were used in university teaching on the politics of gender and sexuality. A set of…
