Restoring or transforming the economy? How institutional actors in Germany and Italy framed Covid-19 economic policies
COVID-19 has deeply affected the economy in Europe and worldwide. We investigate how key institutional actors – ministries, trade associations, and trade unions – made sense of the economic relief policies adopted from the crisis outbreak to its containment. We compare Italy and Germany as two contrasting cases, characterised by varying economic conditions prior to the crisis and differing capacities to cushion their economic impact. Twitter/X te…
Comparison of Online Probability Panels in Europe: New Trends and Old Challenges in the Era of Open Science
Online Probability Panels (OPPs) have emerged as essential research infrastructures for social sciences, offering robust tools for longitudinal analysis and evidence-based policy-making. However, the growing role of the Open Science movement demands systematic evaluation of their compliance. This study compares major European OPPs—including LISS, GESIS, the GIP, ELIPSS, and the Swedish and Norwegian Citizen Panels—focusing on their practices of o…
Contingencies of Solidarity: Comparing Twitter\X Discourses in Italy and Germany during the Covid-19 Crisis
The article examines different articulations of solidarity discourse in Germany and in Italy during the COVID-19 crisis, demonstrating how its meanings varied between the two countries in conjunction with national contingencies influencing how the crisis was experienced. Text analysis with Twitter\X data is used to compare how the term was framed during the crisis. The two countries were selected based on their differing socio-economic, cultural,…
Exploring the dynamics of neighbourhood ethnic segregation with agent-based modelling: An empirical application to Bradford, UK
How individuals’ residential moves translate into overall emergent segregation patterns remains a key challenge in neighbourhood ethnic segregation research. In this paper, we use agent-based modelling to explore this concern, focusing on the interactive role of ethnic and socio-economic homophilic preferences and socioeconomic housing constraints as determinants of residential choice. Specifically, we extend the classic Schelling model to a rand…
The Role of Network Structure and Initial Group Norm Distributions in Norm Conflict
Social norms can facilitate societal coexistence in groups by providing an implicitly shared set of expectations and behavioral guidelines. However, different social groups can hold different norms, and lacking an overarching normative consensus can lead to conflict within and between groups. In this chapter, we present an agent-based model that simulates the adoption of norms in two interacting groups. We explore this phenomenon while varying re…
Simulating Acculturation Dynamics Between Migrants and Locals in Relation to Network Formation
International migration implies the coexistence of different ethnic and cultural groups in the receiving country. The refugee crisis of 2015 has resulted in critical levels of opinion polarization on the question of whether to welcome migrants causing clashes in receiving countries. This scenario emphasizes the need to better understand the dynamics of mutual adaptation between locals and migrants and the conditions that favor successful integrat…
