The Hive in the Cliff: A Case Study in Intergenerational Relations and Culturally Led Regeneration
This paper reports on a current program, the Hive in the Cliff, geared toward initiating social and economic renewal in Broughton, Salford, through a culturally led regeneration and conservation program. Case studies examined included a focus on activities and relationships between individuals at different stages of the life course, but they were not branded as intergenerational activities. Intergenerational relations outlined are implicit outcom…
Theorising Sleep Practices and Later Life: Moving to Sheltered Housing
This paper re-analyses data from a study of older people and sheltered housing which combined textual analysis of professional discourse with interviews. There were only two references salient to 'sleep' in that paper and I offered no analytic comment upon them. At that time, then, sleep as a sociologically interesting topic, was, for me a taken for granted matter. It is that taken for grantedness that is examined here. On being invited to contri…
Theorizing growing and being older: Connecting physical health, well-being and public health
This paper locates the new public health movement's concerns with the social model of health, ‘expert’ and ‘lay’ knowledge and public participation in policy-making in the context of social ageing. Data from a focus-group study, undertaken in Greater Manchester in collaboration with a voluntary organization, are used to demonstrate how individuals connect physical health, well-being and public health in their own theories of growing and being old…
Utilising Space in Sheltered Housing or 'Fitting a Quart into a Pint Pot: Perspectives of Architects and Older People
The author, using textual analysis of architects' professional discourse and interviews with older people, examines their different perspectives on space utilisation in sheltered housing. Both designers and older people approach this matter by way of commonsense usages of home as a physical location and as a location in space. The differences between these individuals are explicated in terms of Schutz's notion of anonymous typifications. It is sh…
Home: Public or private space
A widely held cliche in England is that an Englishman's (sic) home is his castle: I contend that this notion is problematic. Home can be a haven, a workplace, a place of violence and abuse, a danger to one's health, a place for social activism and much more
Sexuality in the Later Years (Book)
Time and the Elderly
This monograph is based on fieldwork conducted in a day centre for the elderly. The fieldworker is an Israeli anthropologist, the day centre is in North East London and its members are all first or second generation Jewish immigrants. On the basis of this combination one might have expected a highly descriptive and culturally specific account of old age, but Haim Hazan has succeeded in transcending the ethnographic details to arrive at a brillian…
Health Auxiliaries and the Health Team (Book)
Old Age in a Changing Society, Lifespan and Factors Affecting It, Human Ageing and Retirement
The Concept of Organization, The University: An Organizational Analysis, The School: An Organizational Analysis, The Hospital: An Organizational Analysis
