An onset cohort of children and adolescents with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and their parents were studied. Aspects of family environment were evaluated at study inception, and their influence on the initial level of, and change in, glycemic control over 4 years was examined. Family measures of expressiveness, cohesiveness, and conflict were linked to differences in the longitudinal pattern of glycemic control. In particular, the …

  • Psychosocial correlates of mild visual loss

    Lawson R Wulsin, A Jacobson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1991

Studies of the psychosocial aspects of visual impairment have emphasized the effects of blindness, giving relatively little attention to the effects of mild or partial visual impairment. Consequently, we know little about when in the course of visual loss significant psychosocial dysfunction develops. To address this question, we assessed psychosocial functioning at three times over eight months in 31 adults with proliferative diabetic retinopath…

Among these women, decisions to terminate a pregnancy were found to be most significantly associated with continuity of mother-child coresidence. We explore the policy implications of this finding

Cases reported significantly more symptoms. They also demonstrated a modest and significant correlation of negative life events with HgbA1c that was not shown in the controls. When the relationship of life events with glycemic con…

  • The craniofacial pattern of the Lengua Indians of Paraguay

Open Access•A Jacobson, Charles Brian Preston et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1977•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Lateral cephalometric headfilms of 30 male and 30 female Lengua Indians taken in the Chaco area of Paraguay were compared with a sample of 23 male and 25 female South African Caucasoids with excellent occlusion. The most obvious difference noted between the two population groups was the degree of prognathism evident in the Lengua. This was attributed to the generally shorter anterior cranial base in the latter group rather than to the size or for…
