The continuance of gender culture amid change in Mexican–American immigrant Catholic contexts
The acceptance and implementation of Roman Catholic teachings on marriage, sexuality, and the family vary both at the individual and at the parish level. While overall, there is a dialectical relationship between gender and religion in the way they inform and mold each other, the majority of research has focused on how religion has shaped gender in communities. We use qualitative data from a Latino immigrant Catholic context in the United States …
Individualism and Marriage: Ideal Types for Making Sense of the Relationship between Self and Sacrifice
Religious Conflict and the Chain of Command in the American and French Militaries
Analyzing characteristics of the organizational environment, the organization, and its actors recommended by the framework guiding this symposium on the cross-cultural study of religion in public institutions, we identify common elements of military organization that shape local and national policies surrounding religion cross-nationally. Comparison of cases from U.S. and French militaries-a secularist group at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Mus…
I'm Gay and I'm Catholic: Negotiating Two Complex Identities at a Catholic University
This article examines the negotiation of sexual and religious identities among gay and lesbian students on a Catholic university campus. We explore context-specific identity negotiation to determine how and why, even in a time of increasing societal acceptance of sexual minorities, boundaries between faith and sexual identity persist. Through participant observation and interviews conducted with gay and lesbian students, we identify and discuss f…
Religion, Secular Humanism, and Atheism: Multi-Institutional Politics and the Usafa Cadets' Freethinkers Group
The recent emergence of atheist movements despite marginalization and distrust by a majority of Americans has been explained as a successful deployment of identity politics, but scholars have less often considered the importance of how identity and power intersect with political opportunity occurring within organizational and religious fields. Analyzing the case of the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) Cadet Freethinkers Group, we demonstrate that a…
Individualized Marriage and Family Disruption Ministries in Congregations: How Culture Matters
U.S. churches continue to support families in a society where many previous supports have weakened. But there is a gap in this support: although almost half of congregations in a recent study report offering marriage counseling and postdivorce ministries, only 25 percent of divorced families report experiencing clergy help or congregational outreach while divorcing or postdivorce. This study analyzes data from 26 Northern Indiana Congregations St…

The Spirit's Tether: Family, Work, and Religion among American Catholics
Cultural conflicts about the family, such as so-called ‘culture wars’ debates concerning abortion and same-sex marriage, have intensified over the last few decades among US Catholics, and among American citizens generally. These conflicts comprise much of the substance of the moral polarization that currently characterizes our public politics. Scholars have demonstrated the importance of the media in their endurance, along with the important role…
Roundtable on the Sociology of Religion: Twenty-Three Theses on the Status of Religion in American Sociology--A Mellon Working-Group Reflection
American sociology has not taken and does not take religion as seriously as it needs to in order to do the best sociology possible. Despite religion being an important and distinctive kind of practice in human social life, both historically and in the world today, American sociologists often neglect religion or treat it reductionistically. We explore several reasons for this negligence, focusing on key historical, conceptual, methodological, and …
Theory as a Tool in the Social Scientific Study of Religion and Martin Riesebrodt's The Promise of Salvation
No single paradigm or debate currently orients the social scientific study of religion. Because of this, those engaged in the multidisciplinary study of religion find that a public conversation is often difficult. In this article and the Forum it introduces, we explore Martin Riesebrodt's recently published book, The Promise of Salvation: A Theory of Religion. Responding to the inadequacies of secularization paradigms, rational choice models, and…
Sacred Places, Domestic Spaces: Material Culture, Church, and Home at Our Lady of the Assumption and St. Brigitta
The relationship between the material culture of public worship and congregants' homes is explored in a study of two Catholic parishes-theologically liberal St. Brigitta and conservative Our Lady of Assumption. At St. Brigitta, congregants' worship space is almost devoid of religious art and ritual objects are plain, but worshippers' homes are rich in decorative objects. By contrast, masses at Our Lady of the Assumption take place in a church fil…

Resources, Races, and Female-Headed Congregations in the United States
This paper uses the 1998 National Congregations Study (NCS) to investigate the demographic and organizational characteristics of female-headed congregations in the United States. Our findings significantly extend knowledge about the demographic characteristics of these congregations. Counterintuitively, female-led congregations are more likely to be found inurban areas than in other locations, and they are more prevalent among African American co…
The National Congregations Study: Background, Methods, and Selected Results
The National Congregations Study (NCS) was conducted in conjunction with the 1998 General Social Survey (GSS). The 1998 GSS asked respondents who attend religious services to name their religious congregation, thus generating a nationally representative sample of religious congregations. Data about these congregations were collected via a one-hour interview with one key informant - a minister, priest, rabbi, or other staff person or leader - from…
