  • Millennial Mosaic: How Pluralism and Choice Are Shaping Canadian Youth and the Future of Canada

Reginald W Bibby, Joel Thiessen et al.•BOOK•Millennial Mosaic•2019

The bottom line: Millennials are looking good. There’s a lot of consternation about the Millennial generation--Canada’s youngest adults born since the mid-1980s and now reaching their thirties. But the speculation has not been accompanied by sound and comprehensive information--until now. Highly respected sociologist and veteran trend-tracker Reginald Bibby teams up with two GenX colleagues, Joel Thiessen and Monetta Bailey, to provide an up-to-d…

  • Resilient Gods: Being Pro-Religious, Low Religious, or No Religious in Canada

    Reginald W Bibby•BOOK•Resilient Gods•2017

Are Canadians becoming less religious? After playing a central role in our lives for nearly a century, religion did seem to be losing its salience in Canada. Many observers saw this trend as inevitable, reflecting secularization patterns seen elsewhere in the Western world. But there is more to the story. Reginald Bibby’s Resilient Gods takes an in-depth look at the religious landscape in Canada today. Pulling together extensive data, he finds th…

  • Life after Death: Data and Reflections on the Last Information Gap: A Research Note

    Open Access•Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2017•References: 16

This paper examines beliefs and experiential claims concerning life after death provided by some 5,000 people in Canada, the United States, and Britain in the spring of 2014. The surveys show that large numbers of people continue to believe life continues after death. Beyond belief, many maintain that individuals who have died are following what is taking place in their lives and continuing to be in contact. Such claims raise important questions …

  • The Future as an Allusion: Using Social and Personal Forecasts to Uncover Explicit and Implicit Religion

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2016

The author’s research into attempts to anticipate the future has found that three dominant frameworks or what Charles Glock and Thomas Piazza have called “reality structures” are apparent. The first and second reality structures involve different degrees of determinism, and typically are found among scientists and other futurists who, of necessity, focus on collective rather than individual futures. By definition, their assumptions about the futu…

  • What the Polls Do Show: Toward Enhanced Survey Readings of Religion in Canada

    Open Access•Reginald W Bibby, Andrew Grenville•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•2016

  • Reflections on the 36th Denton Conference on Implicit Religion

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2013

The 36th Denton Conference on Implicit Religion was held at Denton Hall in Ilkley, West Yorkshire from Friday evening May 10th through Sunday noon May 12th, 2013. The gathering consisted of 32 registrants and 18 paper presentations. By now, the concept of “implicit religion” has become widely known and used, in large part due to the efforts of Edward Bailey, who coined the term in 1968. Now, 45 years later, scholars routinely reflect on the conce…

    Open Access•Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 3

David Eagle's article on changing patterns of religious service attendance appeared in the March 2011 issue of Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. He presented a comprehensive analysis of three data sets that allow social scientists to estimate the rate of religious service attendance in Canada: Project Canada Survey (PCS), the General Social Survey (GSS), and the Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering, and Participating (GSGVP). Regin…

  • Canada’s Dataless Debate About Religion: The Pre-carious Role of Research in Identifying Implicit and Explicit Religion

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2010

Scholars interested in the study of implicit religion often appear to work from the assumption that traditional forms of organized religion have become less pervasive, but that less visible and important religious expressions nonetheless persist. The argument has been particularly pertinent when observers have tried to understand what happens to religion in settings where secularization seems apparent. However, a somewhat different pattern also w…

  • La religion à la carte au Québec: Une Analyse De Tendances

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Sociologie et sociétés•2002•Cited by: 6

  • Canada's Mythical Religious Mosaic: Some CensusFindings

    Open Access•Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2000•Cited by: 9

Extensive world-wide emigration to Canada has resulted in the widely-held perception that this self-declared, 'multicultural'country is characterized by considerable religious diversity. National census data, however, suggest that such a religious mosaic is largely a myth. The proportion of Canadians who identify with Christianity remains high, while those who adhere to Other Faiths has risen only slightly over time. To the extent that religious …

  • Canadians' Belief in Catharsis

Open Access•Gordon W Russell, Gordon Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1995

A national sample (N=3,815) of 15 to 19-year-old Canadian high school students responded to a questionnaire that assessed attitudes toward contemporary social problems, e.g., violence in schools, against women and that associated with youth gangs. Beliefs in catharsis were measured by asking respondents to indicate the extent to which participating in, and observing, aggression, reduces one's level of aggression. Males provided stronger support t…

    Reginald W Bibby, Harold R Weaver•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1985

Stark and Bainbridge have asserted that because of the unique ability of religion to address ultimate questions, secularization stimulates religious innovation. The decline of some religions is associated with the rise of new ones, precisely because the market becomes more open. Stark and Bainbridge have used North American and European data to show that cult activity is in fact most concentrated where conventional participation appears to be wea…

  • Circulation of the Saints in South America: A Comparative Study

Merlin B Brinkerhoff, Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1985

Having examined the nature of conservative church growth in a highly industrialized setting, Canada, the authors turn to South America and explore evangelical expansion in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. Protestants in these developing countries are found to be growing primarily through proselytism, at the expense of the Roman Catholic Church. Nevertheless, as in Canada, the religious market in South America appears to be fairly tight. Moreover, the d…

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1983•Cited by: 1

Beginning with a review of the theoretical and empirical work on invisible religion, the author proceeds to use Canadian national data to identify a number of conventional and unconventional themes which might characterize meaning systems in that country. The extent to which these themes are associated with the immanent level in the form of sphere integration and the ultimate level in the form of answers to ultimate questions is then examined. Wh…

    Reginald W Bibby•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1978•Cited by: 9

The application parameters of Kelley's thesis concerning Conservative church growth are examined from a recent Canadian national survey. Utilizing a basic demographic approach, the Conservative and Mainline groups had essentially the same proportion of proselytes, and the superior Conservative growth was related to: (1) birth and religious socialization, (2) switching, and (3) a higher level of participation. Kelley's thesis is seen as a plausibl…

Maintaining that the proselytizing of outsiders requires contact, bridging, and assimilation mechanisms, they examine the evangelistic efforts and results of 20 proselyte-minded Canadian churches over a five-year period.
