Americans' Views of Muslims and Mormons: A Social Identity Theory Approach
Although American society is religiously pluralistic, not all religious groups enjoy equal levels of public approval and support. Indeed, America has a history of viewing members of nontraditional religious groups with considerable distrust and suspicion. Two religious groups in particular — Muslims and Mormons — have come under fire in recent years, though not necessarily for the same reasons. Muslims and Mormons have frequently been viewed as o…

The Political Activity of Evangelical Clergy in the Election of 2000: A Case Study of Five Denominations
This article focuses on the political participation of ministers from five evangelical Protestant denominations that differ in theology, polity, and history. Despite such differences, these clergy respond to political influences in much the same fashion. We find that the standard theories of political participation have varying success in accounting for their political involvement. Sociodemographic explanations provide little help, but psychologi…

The Political Behavior of American Catholics: An Assessment of the Impact of Group Integration Vs. Group Identification
IN RECENT years scholars have given increasing attention to the politics of American Catholics (Reichley 1984; Formicola and Stark 1986; Hoffman 1986; Leege and Welch 1986). Much of this attention has involved comparing the political attitudes and behavior of Catholics with those of non-Catholics (Greely 1977; Lopatto 1985; Reichley 1984 and 1986). Attention has also been given to comparing the political attitudes and behavior of Catholics over t…
Changing Partisanship and Issue Stands among American Catholics
Various studies of the changing political orientations of American Catholics have reached differing conclusions. While some studies suggest that Catholics are becoming more politically conservative, others suggest that this isn't so. This paper examines changing political orientations of Catholics over the 197283 period. Thefindings support the position that Catholics have, in fact, become more conservative over the past decade. However, little e…
