This article empirically identifies and conceptualises listener expectations of podcast hosts based on a general and open research question concerning which expectations podcast listeners have for podcast hosts. From an explorative empirical study of 20 online focus group interviews with Danish radio- and podcast listeners, the article concludes that the expectations of podcast hosts are grouped into three categories: knowledge, storytelling, and…

From close listening to distant listening: Developing tools for Speech-Music discrimination of Danish music radio
Digitization has changed flow music radio. Competition from music streaming services like Spotify and iTunes has to a large extend outperformed traditional playlist radio, and the global dissemination of software generated playlists in public service radio stations in the 1990s has superseded the passionate music radio host. But digitization has also changed the way we can do research in radio. In Denmark digitization of almost all radio programm…

The audiobook circuit in digital publishing: Voicing the silent revolution
Digital Internet-distributed audiobooks are a surprising game changer in digital publishing. In recent years, audiobooks have moved from being a peripheral by-product of the printed book into the centre of digital publishing and reading, but are typically still ignored in publishing studies. This article raises the voice of the audiobook by giving it a privileged status in the current transformations of book publishing caused by digitization. We …
Today let's gently brush your ears: ASMR som mediekulturelt og lydligt fænomen
ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is a physiological sensory reaction usually described as 'a tingling, static-like sensation across the scalp, back of the neck and at times further areas in response to specific triggering audio and visual stimuli' (Barratt & Davis, 2015). In the last decade ASMR has also become a growing media cultural phenomenon, especially on YouTube, where ASMRtists create videos that help you overcome stress, lonel…

This article addresses cultural changes resulting from the growing number of audiobook users and changes in audiobook use emerging from digital technological developments of the past decade. The sonification of the written text is inscribed in the general transformation and mediatization of the printed book but offers radically different affordances than do visually perceived e-books. New portable digital audio media change the act of reading, mo…
Nicolai Jørgensgaard Graakjær: Musik i tv-reklamer – teori og analyse. Frederiksberg: Samfundslitteratur. 2011
Attitudes towards documentary soundstracks - Between emotional immersion and critical reflection
Musical experience is often related to an emotional and imaginative engagement of the listener. Discourses of journalistic documentaries relate primarily to inferential knowledge systems in which the uses of background music as a communicative device become an object of epistemological critique. By listening to different voices – primarily from four focus group interviews – the article will discuss attitudes towards musical soundtracks in documen…
