Toward a Model of Top Management Team Strategic Leadership Development
We build theory on the development of team-level capabilities for strategic leadership. Strategic leadership is fundamentally a collective process, yet contemporary education remains paradoxically anchored in individual-centric training models. To unpack this disconnect, we analyze a decade-long strategic leadership program involving multiple top management teams (TMTs) in South America using a qualitative, abductive approach. Our findings show t…
Repairing ontological security: The collective sensemaking of affective stakeholders in online communities
Our study investigates how affective stakeholders – emotionally invested but organizationally powerless individuals – collectively make sense of unexpected organizational events in online environments. Drawing on a netnographic analysis of a National Hockey League fan forum, we examine how Edmonton Oilers supporters responded to the unexpected trade request of star player Chris Pronger. We find that the disruption of fans’ ideal, expected future …
Organizational violence, memory and trauma
Trauma is a persistent form of memory and a response to organizational violence. Yet, research on traumatic memories has been absent from most management journals. In analyzing how organizations manage, interpret, and use the positive aspects of their past to achieve strategic goals, scholars have missed what they willfully forget. Studying organizational violence and trauma requires engaging with the communities and stakeholders affected by thei…
The strategic use of historical narratives: A theoretical framework
History has long been recognised as a strategic and organisational resource. However, until recently, the advantage conferred by history was attributed to a firm’s ability to accumulate heterogeneous resources or develop opaque practices. In contrast, we argue that the advantage history confers on organisations is based on understanding when the knowledge of the past is referenced and the reasons why it is strategically communicated. We argue tha…
New identities from remnants of the past: An examination of the history of beer brewing in Ontario and the recent emergence of craft breweries
We present an exploratory analysis of historical narratives and data covering 200 years of beer brewing in the Canadian province of Ontario. These data are used to illuminate the process of collective identity emergence in established organisational fields. We argue that established fields are typically littered with identity remnants from ancestral organisations and related institutional configurations that can facilitate the successful emergenc…
