  • Aiming at the 'proper' body

    Open Access•Denisa Butnaru•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2024•References: 12

Exoskeletal devices are new technologies that have been developed in the medical field to provide assistance and rehabilitation for persons with motor impairments. Among these impairments, spinal cord injury and stroke are the most common. Drawing on materials collected during multi-sited ethnography conducted in France, Germany and Switzerland from 2014 to 2019, I suggest that exoskeletons contribute to a more general process that I identify as …

  • Temporarily Abled

    Open Access•Denisa Butnaru•ARTICLE•NanoEthics•2021•References: 5

Recent achievements in rehabilitative robotics modify essential parameters of the human body, such as motility. Exoskeletons used for persons with neurological impairments like spinal cord injury and stroke enter this category by rehabilitating and assisting damaged motor patterns, achievements thought impossible until not long ago. Unlike other examples leading to similar dysfunctions, such as diseases or tumors, the experience of an accident ca…

  • Exoskeletons, Rehabilitation and Bodily Capacities

    Open Access•Denisa Butnaru•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 38

Motility impairments resulting from spinal cord injuries and cerebrovascular accidents are increasingly prevalent in society, leading to the growing development of rehabilitative robotic technologies, among them exoskeletons. This article outlines how bodies with neurological conditions such as spinal cord injury and stroke engage in processes of re-appropriation while using exoskeletons and some of the challenges they face. The main task of exos…

David Le Breton, Denisa Butnaru•BOOK•Corps abîmés•2013
