  • An ethics based on fatigue? Problematisations of family carers’ abuse in violence prevention discourse in the Finnish media

    Open Access•Liina Sointu•ARTICLE•International Journal of Care and…•2026

As a large share of long-term care occurs at home, there is a need to respond to abuse by family carers in policy and research. Drawing on social constructionism, this article examines how such abuse is problematised in Finnish third-sector violence prevention discourse, which highlights fatigue as a central underlying cause of abuse. The findings show that fatigue-induced carer abuse is problematised in three ways: (1) as a problem of individual…

  • Institutional, humane, therapeutic

    Open Access•Liina Sointu•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2025•References: 4

Violence in family caregiving, once a social taboo, is now emerging as a topic of scientific inquiry. Engaging with a non-normative approach to care and critical reflection on research of abusive caregiver behaviour and elder abuse, this study argues that as caregiver violence is increasingly addressed in research, it is crucial to understand it as a complex issue within its social context. The study adds to this understanding by conducting a dis…

  • Kapitalismin hiertymiä ja silityksiä iholla

    Open Access•Liina Sointu•ARTICLE•Tiede & edistys•2024

Sosiologian professori Suvi Salmenniemen teos Affect, Alienation and Politics in Therapeutic Culture: Capitalism on the Skin käsittelee terapeuttista kulttuuria.

  • Doing Community Amid Tension and Vulnerability

    Open Access•Liina Sointu, Liisa Häikiö•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2024•References: 13

Rather than fixed entities, urban communities are in a constant process of making: They are practised in and through everyday relational settings and are therefore necessarily tension‐laden. Drawing from focus group interviews with older adults living in the third‐largest city in Finland, we aim to further the understanding of “doing community” amid tensions and vulnerability. We analyse older people’s accounts of their everyday dealings and doin…

  • The Public, the Private and the Changing Expectations for Everyday Welfare Services

    Open Access•Liina Sointu, T K Lehtonen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 8

This article sheds light on a policy area where the notion of the active citizen has gained prominence as part of the transformation of the welfare state: purchasing private health services and private health insurance for children in Finland. Although the country’s universal health care system offers free primary health care for children, 40 per cent of children now have private insurance. Drawing on interviews with parents who seek private solu…
