Training in Clinical Psychology in the United States: Scientist–Practitioner Model
A Butch Among the Belles
This memoir of a 65-year-old "butch" lesbian describes her growing-up days in the South and her subsequent professional identity as a university professor and psychologist. The article includes feelings about being raised as a girl while feeling male. Personal reactions to family pressures to conform to a rigid sex role are noted and some attention is given to the effects of living an adult life in the closet

A Faded Icon
As I sit at my desk with computer, fax, and phone, I cannot escape seeing a small Confederate flag in my pencil holder. This faded icon of a time before internets and e-mail still sends a message as powerful as any in cyberspace. For almost fifty years, I have kept this flag on whatever desk I have used. I don't recall where or when I first found it, but it has been with me at least from my high school days
Misassumptions, misadventures, and the misuse of psychology
Misassumptions, misadventures, and the misuse of psychology
The history of psychology reveals tragic episodes of the misuse of psychological concepts and methods. Some of these misassumptions continue to influence the psychology practices of today. The contributions of people who differ from male, Eurocentric norms are not often appreciated, nor are the cultural differences of these individuals or groups either understood or respected. In this address, the author notes some of the pernicious effects and s…
Long-Term Effects of Parental Divorce on Love Relationships: Divorce as Attachment Disruption
This study is an exploration of the long-term effects of parental divorce on a person's romantic relationships. Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969a) suggests that parental divorce in itself may not cause poor romantic relationships, but rather, growing up with poor parent-child relationships and protracted interparental conflict may be what is most destructive to subsequent romantic relationships. Seventy-eight college students with divorced parents…
Research on sexual orientation and human development: A commentary
Over the last 25 years, dramatic advances have occurred in the understanding of the development of sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian interests and behavior appear to result from a complex interplay of genetic, prenatal, and environmental influences. Gender identity develops early, especially for males, and is difficult to change. Homosexuality is less likely to be characterized as pathological, although discrimination and hate crimes continue t…

Women's Psychological Adjustment Following Emergency Cesarean Versus Vaginal Delivery
The present study was designed to investigate possible differences in psychological adjustment and satisfaction between women delivering vaginally and those delivering by emergency cesarean section. Women's satisfaction with the birth experience was distinguished from postpartum psychological adjustment, as measured by depression, anxiety, and confidence in mothering ability. Twenty-two women who delivered vaginally and twenty-two women who deliv…
Sex-Related Differences in Health and Illness
Mortality and morbidity statistics which reflect the major health disorders in the nation have changed dramatically in this century. Infectious diseases have been largely controlled, and this country's citizens are now burdened with the chronic and disabling disorders of an aging population that are increasingly linked to environmental and behavioral factors. This article documents gender and sex differences among the major life-threatening disor…

Interpersonal betrayal and cooperation: Effects on self-evaluation in depression
Despite numerous studies demonstrating that depressed people are generally self-critical, little is known about interpersonal stressors that may activate or increase this negative self-evaluation. In this study, the effect of interpersonal betrayal and cooperative social interaction on self-evaluation processes in depressed and nondepressed women was assessed. Depressed subjects who experienced interpersonal betrayal were more critical of their p…

Sex differences on the Rotter I-E scale
Sex differences on the Rotter I–E scale
Studies using the Rotter I-E scale have generally reported similar means and standard deviations for male and female subjects. Factor-analytic studies with the scale have also revealed similar factors across sex of respondent. Yet, when male and female subjects are asked to respond to the Rotter scale according to stereotypical sex roles, differences are striking, suggesting that sex role bias could be operating. A number of investigators also re…

Delay of gratification as a function of race of the experimenter
Sixth-grade black and white students were offered one 45-rpm record as an immediate reward for completing a locus of control measure or three records if they would wait for the experimenter, either a black or a white male, to return 3 weeks later. About 80% of the white students chose the delayed, more valuable reward, regardless of the race of the experimenter. Thirty-three percent of the black students chose the delayed reward from the white ex…

Individual differences in verbal conditioning, extinction, and awareness1
