From Challenge to Opportunity: Virtual Qualitative Research During Covid-19 and Beyond
COVID-19 has required researchers to adapt methodologies for remote data collection. While virtual interviewing has traditionally received limited attention in the qualitative literature, recent adaptations to the pandemic have prompted increased discussion and adoption. Yet, current discussion has focussed on practical and ethical concerns and retained a tone of compromise, of coping in a crisis. This paper extends the nascent conversations begu…
The appallingly bad neoclassical economics of climate change
Forecasts by economists of the economic damage from climate change have been notably sanguine, compared to warnings by scientists about damage to the biosphere. This is because economists made their own predictions of damages, using three spurious methods: assuming that about 90% of GDP will be unaffected by climate change, because it happens indoors; using the relationship between temperature and GDP today as a proxy for the impact of global war…
Emergent Macroeconomics: Deriving Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis Directly from Macroeconomic Definitions
Though Minsky developed a compelling verbal model of the ‘Financial Instability Hypothesis' (FIH), he abandoned his early attempts to build a mathematical model. I show that the essential characteristics of Minsky's hypothesis are emergent properties of a complex systems macroeconomic model which is derived directly from macroeconomic definitions, augmented by the simplest possible assumptions for relations between system states, and the simplest…
Support for people who use Anabolic Androgenic Steroids: A Systematic Scoping Review into what they want and what they access
Support needs to be specific and targeted towards AAS users. Sensitivity to their perceptions of their drug-use and the associated stigma of being classified in the same sub-set as other illicit drug users is relevant to facilitating successful engagement
Workplace Accidents Among Nepali Male Workers in the Middle East and Malaysia: A Qualitative Study
There are many Nepali men working in the Middle East and Malaysia and media reports and anecdotal evidence suggest a high risk of workplace-related accidents and injuries for male Nepali workers. Therefore, this study aims to explore the personal experiences of male Nepali migrants of unintentional injuries at their place of work. In-depth, face-to-face interviews (n = 20) were conducted with male Nepali migrant workers. Study participants were a…

Trade and the Gains from Diversity: Why Economists Failed to Predict the Consequences of Brexit
In this brief article I explain why the expectation amongst economists that Brexit means Britain will experience significant economic losses, thanks to the reversal of the gains from specialisation, is incorrect. The background assumptions regarding comparative advantage are false and cannot inform real-world situations. However, this is not the same as to suggest Britain as a post-Brexit country will follow successful trade policies

La crise économique que connaît la Grèce nécessite une relecture historique. Quelles opérations financières ont précipité la Grèce dans la crise ? Les mesures d'austérité demandées par la « troïka » ont-elles été efficaces ? Quelles propositions pour la suite
Post Keynesian Theories of Crisis
Post Keynesian economics has two complementary theories of crisis that were used to predict the 2007 crisis and diagnose its causes: Minsky's financial instability hypothesis and Godley's stock-flow-consistent approach. Both theories take a monetary perspective on capitalism and argue that the dynamics of private debt caused the crisis. As well as explaining the crisis and enabling its occurrence (though not precise timing) to be predicted, both …

The Incoherent Emperor: A Heterodox Critique of Neoclassical Microeconomic Theory
It is somewhat common for heterodox economists to come to the defense of neoclassical microeconomic theory. This is due to many reasons, but perhaps the commonest one is ignorance. It seems that most heterodox economists are not aware of the many critiques or that as a collective they completely undermine neoclassical theory. The objective of the article is to dispel ignorance by using the existing criticisms to delineate a systematic critique of…
Debunking Economics: The Naked Emperor of the Social Sciences
Explains and debunks conventional neoclassical economic theory from first principles. Highlights the unsound foundations of major elements of the standard undergraduate education in economics, discussing problems with consumer demand theory, the theory of supply, the economic theory of the firm, and the theory of the labor market. Addresses important issues that are typically omitted or trivialized in an economics education, considering controver…
Answers (and Questions) for Sraffians (and Kaleckians)
Steedman's ‘Questions for Kaleckians’ is rightly critical of the lack of attention paid by Kaleckian economists to the input-output nature of production. However, his conclusions about Kaleckian mark-up pricing and the irrelevance of dynamics are incorrect, for three reasons. First, his rendition of a Kaleckian model with constant mark-ups is only conditionally stable. Secondly, there is ample evidence that Kaleckian mark-ups should vary inversel…
Use-Value, Exchange Value, and the Demise of Marx's Labor Theory of Value
Karl Marx was the greatest champion of the labor theory of value. The logical problems of this theory have, however, split scholars of Marx into two factions: those who regard it as an indivisible component of Marxism, and those who wish to continue the spirit of analysis begun by Marx without the labor theory of value. In the debate between these two camps, the former has attempted to draw support from Marx's concepts of value, while the latter …
The Misinterpretation of Marx's Theory of Value
The “technical” interpretation of Karl Marx's theory of value, which asserted that the concept of use-value played no role in his economics, has in recent years been shown to be ill-founded. In particular, R. Rosdolsky (1977) and S. Groll (1980) have established the importance that Marx attached to the concept of use-value in his theory of value, while I have shown that the use-value is an essential component of his analysis of the commodity, and…
