For several decades ethnologists have discussed reflexivity and its implications for research. This also often means that the researcher’s personal history and background need to be taken into account when studying other people and their lives. In this article my point of departure is the summerhouse of my family, built in 1907. I spent all my summers during childhood in this house close by the lake, so did my mother, her sister and my grandmothe…

When reading my grandmother’s diary, written 1918–1920, I became acquainted with her as a person whom I never knew. In the familyfolklore, she is described as a rather passive woman, subordinated to her husband. In her diaries we meet a young woman, who had spent some time in Berlin, lost her fiancé in World War I, returned to Sweden and fallen in love with a young student of law in Uppsala. Her text describes the everyday life, but also her thou…

In this article the process of turning two Swedish artists' houses into museums is discussed. Anders Zorn (1860-1920) and Bror Hjorth (1894-1968) stipulated their respective houses to function as museums after their death. Zorngården in Mora (Dalecarlia) opened in 1942 and Bror Hjorths Hus in Uppsala in 1977. Zorn and Hjorth were influenced by the domestic ideals of their time and were very different from each other. While Zorngården is a huge ho…

    Open Access•Birgitta Meurling•ARTICLE•Kulturella Perspektiv – Svensk…•2003

In this article the male dominance of the university is discussed. Studies of academic life indicate that many women feel unfamiliar with the structures within the academy and therefore leave the university to a greater extent than their male colleagues do. I present some mentor projects within my own faculty, that I have coordinated together with a colleague, and discuss with reference to the gender equality plans of the university what possibil…

This article is an empirical study of a segregated area in the town of Uppsala, and of the building intentions that failed. The planners focused on building different kinds of housing, not realizing that it would make a distinction between immigrants and Swedes. We argue that agents are needed on more than one level to form an integrated society and that the individual standpoint is the key. We focus on two examples of integration agents, the chu…

In this article the aspect of reflexivity in Anna Birgitta Rooth's study of L.O., the wife of a small farmer, and her world view is discussed (Rooth 1981). How does Rooth interpret her role as a scholar in the field? Even if not explicitly discussed, it is obvious that she is aware of the impact of gender and social background when conducting field work. However, the point of departure in the L.O.-study is another: Rooth wants to develop a new to…

    Open Access•Birgitta Meurling•ARTICLE•Kulturella Perspektiv – Svensk…•1999

The aim with the article is to discuss how Swedish women clergy constitute gender in their professional career navigating between appreciation and resistance. It is obvious that the women clergy often are given a warm reception by people in the parish, but not always by their male colleagues. Here we speak of a kind of male homosociality which excludes women from the "top positions" in the Church of Sweden. In their professional position gender i…
