  • The Reproduction of Wealth Inequality

Open Access•Jon Rogstad, Ingunn Marie Eriksen et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2025•References: 34

The mechanisms propelling wealth inequality remain insufficiently understood. This paper aims to explore the transmission of parents' financial orientation to their children, shedding light on the processes of cultivation that contribute to the reproduction of privileges. Drawing on interviews with parents and their children in two contrasting communities in Norway, one middle-class and one upper-class community, we investigate how money is embed…

  • From Zero to Hero. Belonging and Re-enrolment in Education Among Young People Outside School

    Open Access•Jon Rogstad•ARTICLE•Young•2024•References: 3

This article investigates the process of re-enrolling young people who have dropped out of school. Drawing on an analytical framework that integrates perspectives on resilience and belonging, the study explores the potential of at-risk youth to overcome challenges and complete their upper secondary education. A crucial aspect of facilitating their reintegration is establishing a sense of belonging. The data comprise in-depth interviews and observ…

  • Experience, stereotypes and discrimination. Employers’ reflections on their hiring behavior

    Open Access•Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund, Lars E F Johannessen et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 9

This article explores the relationship between labor market discrimination, stereotypes and employers’ experiences with immigrant workers. Based on interviews with 58 employers, recruited as part of three randomized field experiments on ethnic discrimination in the Norwegian labor market, we find that experience matters in three distinct ways: first, employers with negative experiences with immigrant workers were unwilling to give job applicants …

  • Do terrorist attacks affect ethnic discrimination in the labour market? Evidence from two randomized field experiments

Open Access•Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund, Tak Wing Chan et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 37

Terrorist attacks are known to influence public opinion. But do they also change behaviour? We address this question by comparing the results of two identical randomized field experiments on ethnic discrimination in hiring that we conducted in Oslo. The first experiment was conducted before the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway; the second experiment was conducted after the attacks. In both experiments, applicants with a typical Pakistani name wer…

• Institutional Change in the Public Sphere

Open Access•Fredrik Engelstad, Håkon Larsen et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Institutional Change in the…•2017

The main focus of the book is institutional change in the Scandinavian model, with special emphasis on Norway. There are many reasons to pay closer attention to the Norwegian case when it comes to analyses of changes in the public sphere. In the country’s political history, the arts and the media played a particular role in the processes towards sovereignty at the beginning of the 20th century. On a par with the other Scandinavian countries, Norw…

  • Additive or Multiplicative Disadvantage? The Scarring Effects of Unemployment for Ethnic Minorities

Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund, Kristian Heggebø et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 36

Previous research has documented that unemployed job applicants have problems re-entering the labour market, commonly referred to as scarring effects of unemployment. Studies have also documented ethnic discrimination in the labour market. Yet, we do not know how these categories jointly shape employers hiring decisions. Thus, we do not know if unemployed minorities face an additive or a multiplicative disadvantage in hiring processes. Building o…

  • Antiracism and Social Movements in Norway

    Carl Endre Espeland, Jon Rogstad•ARTICLE•New Community•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 7

How can a single event become critical, potentially challenge a dominant discourse and lead to institutional change? In this article we use two recent events in Norway to answer this question. In the first a dark-skinned person was killed by the police; in the second, an ambulance crew refused to take an injured man to hospital for emergency treatment. The term ‘critical event’ means that certain events can become critical if, through framing, th…

  • Velmenende likegyldighet. Konflikt og integrasjon i et flerkulturelt sykehus

    Jon Rogstad, Kari N Solbrække•ARTICLE•Sosiologisk tidsskrift•2012

  • Discrimination

    Open Access•Arnfinn H Midtbøen, Jon Rogstad•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2012•Cited by: 13•References: 26

Field experiments have proved productive in documenting the continuing relevance of race and ethnicity in the shaping of opportunities in modern societies. However, methodological questions have been raised concerning the existence of unobservable variables and the subsequent danger of drawing inferences on a wrong basis. In this article, we address these debates and discuss a research strategy which to a large degree exceeds the challenges posed…

    Jon Rogstad, Viggo Vestel•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 16

Participation in conventional politics, such as elections, membership of organizations and political parties, is relatively low among young adults of ethnic minority background. Instead, engagement seems to find its way through aesthetic and other expressive channels of influence drawing on new technologies, impulses from transnational youth culture traditions, and both street riots and less conflictual actions. The aim of this article is to gras…
