  • Artistic Investigations

    Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•Critique d’art•2022

Theatres of war are proliferating, fake news is rampant on social media, and the ecological crisis is getting worse. Political leaders are struggling to stem the tensions caused by this dangerous tide of events and often seem out of their depth. As for the justice system, it is too slow to act when it is not powerless to intervene. In this context, it may seem rather bold to think that artists could make a difference: yet a number of recent publi…

  • How do international lawyers handle facts? The role of folk sociological theories at the International Criminal Court

    Open Access•Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates international crimes committed in different parts of the world. Earlier scholarly analysis of the work performed by the ICC judges has pointed out that judges often lack cultural and national understanding of the local norms and customs of regions where defendants come from. This article treats this lack of contextual knowledge displayed by the court as a case of structural ignorance rather than…

  • Les acteurs nationaux du droit pénal international

    Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•L Année sociologique•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 3

    Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•Mouvements•2008•References: 2

    Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•Critique internationale•2007

So Far, So Near: The Legitimacy of Investigation in Universal Jurisdiction Cases When an examining magistrate has to investigate crimes committed abroad, not only is the margin for maneuver slimmer than in investigations on the national territory, but also the very legitimacy of the procedure is challenged by the defense, which seeks to prove that the court is invalid. How can examining magistrates recover their freedom of action? Should they rel…

  • L'internationalisation de la justice transitionnelle

    Julien Seroussi•ARTICLE•Critique internationale•2006•Cited by: 2

The Internationalization of Transitional Justice: The Hissène Habré Case In examining the determinants and outcomes of the democratization process, scholars have often underestimated the use of law by reducing it to a mere instrument to legitimate political domination conquered by other means. Through analysis of the different attempts to put former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré on trial, those initiated by the Chadian government, the victims’ a…
