  • Knowledge in the public realm – the educative agent

    Open Access•Karen Charman•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research Journal•2023•References: 4

Purpose The purpose of the project was to intervene in a deficit reading of communities. This article engages public pedagogy in a way that suggests a new approach to the field. To this end, both the terms public and pedagogy are interrogated. Design/methodology/approach The approach in this paper is an analysis of a qualitative research project: the knowledge project and pop-up school. The theoretical framework used to undertake the analysis of …

  • Theorizing the 'Public'-Recognizing Ephemeral and Migrating Publics and the Educative Agent

    Open Access•Karen Charman, Mary Dixon•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 14

As the parameters of social mobility decrease in light of COVID 19, we are turning away from the global to smaller iterations of community. These communities have always been there, but our collective gaze has, over a long period of time, persistently turned outward. Taking the term public, this article examines how iterations of the public realm reveal authority and the circulation of knowledge. We suggest two instances of the public realm 'ephe…

  • A wandering archive – a nuanced creative enactment of GLBT histories

    Karen Charman•ARTICLE•Continuum•2016•References: 4

This article examines performativity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) historical archives to argue such performance is an act of resistance to the ahistorical neoliberal commodification of queer. LINEAGE: Matchmaking in the Archive and A Wandering Archive is a project initiated by artist and academic E.G. Crichton. In A Wandering Archive, I collaborated with E.G. Crichton to enact lineage intertwining our subjectivities in a publi…

  • Bringing the Outside In and Bringing the Inside Out-Artifacts in a University Classroom

    Open Access•Karen Charman•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2013•References: 3

This article draws on psychoanalysis to theorize artifacts as data in a postsecondary classroom setting. Psychoanalytic theory offers nuanced frames through which to interpret this data. What psychoanalysis alerts us to are the multiple and as such irreducible meanings of experience. Importantly psychoanalysis allows reading of this data for its affective moments. What does it mean for students to bring personal artifacts into a classroom? What s…

  • Education for a new ‘museology’

    Karen Charman•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012•References: 2

This article provides a critical reading of a curriculum initiative in tertiary education designed to address students who are traditionally marginalised in the Australian tertiary sector. An argument is made that this curriculum approach with its emphases on authenticity, identity, agency and embodied learning addresses issues of the disjunct between access to knowledge, museums and cultural capital. The political work of this curriculum is situ…

All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind. Karl Marx, Commu

  • What Really Happened at Three Mile Island

    Karen Charman•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2009

  • False Starts and False Solutions

    Karen Charman•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2008•Cited by: 4

Up until Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, was released two years ago, the public debate, particularly in the U.S., was still in the phase of trying to work out whether global warming*human caused or not*was a real phenomenon. Since An Inconvenient Truth hit the theaters, it is now accepted, at least in an abstract sense, that global warming is, in fact, real. The carbon polluter-funded skeptics are still out there, but now they are g…
