  • Hormonal evidence supports the theory of selection in utero

    Open Access•Ralph Catalano, R A Catalano et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2012

OBJECTIVES: Antagonists in the debate over whether the maternal stress response during pregnancy damages or culls fetuses have invoked the theory of selection in utero to support opposing positions. We describe how these opposing arguments arise from the same theory and offer a novel test to discriminate between them. Our test, rooted in reports from population endocrinology that human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) signals fetal fitness, contribut…

  • Development and the Yucatec Maya in Quintana Roo

Maya agriculture is currently outperforming alternatives across the Yucatán Peninsula, while changing to incorporate new ideas that fit with its basic commitment to shifting agriculture based on maize as the staple and over 100 minor crops. Considerable research over the last 60 years has shown the reasons for agricultural resilience, which include thorough understanding of the Yucatán environment and use of a range of resources and techniques th…

  • Yucatec Maya Botany and the "Nature" of Science

    Open Access•E Anderson, Eugene N Anderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Ecological Anthropology•2010

Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) has often been regarded as outdated, frozen in the past. For example, the anthropologist Paul Nadasdy (2004) found such attitudes in the Yukon, where government biologists, often with little field experience, dismissed and belittled local indigenous knowledge. They assumed it to be static and anecdotal, and often based on spiritual rather than empirical foundations. Similar dismissal of TEK by biologists and…

The selection of K–12 mathematics curricula has become a polarizing issue for schools, teachers, parents, and other educators and has raised important questions about the long-term influence of these curricula. This study examined the impact of participation in either a National Science Foundation–funded or commercially developed mathematics curriculum on the difficulty level of the first university mathematics course a student enrolled in and th…

The enormous social changes of the twentieth century, culminating in the civil rights movement and followed by civil disorders occurring on a wide scale in urban America, resulted in attempts by the wider society to incorporate black Americans through federally mandated social programs such as affirmative acti…
