Principal discipline decision-making
This study examines how principals navigate the complex challenges of student discipline decision-making. Through semi-structured interviews with 50 school administrators in a northwestern U.S. state, the research identifies five critical domains of tension: policy constraints, resource limitations, relationship management, value conflicts, and discretionary restrictions. While principals generally have autonomy in decision-making, they face sign…
Prospective cohort study evaluating feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact of diabetes self-management education in a PEN-Plus program in Southeastern Liberia
People living with insulin dependent diabetes (PLWIDD) in low and lower-middle income countries (LLMICs), specifically rural areas, face significant barriers to diabetes management. Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is an evidence-based intervention to educate and empower people living with diabetes to improve self-management. This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and clinical impact of a DSME program in a rural Package of Essential …
Addressing severe chronic NCDs across Africa
Severe chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose important challenges for health systems across Africa. This study explores the current availability of and demand for decentralization of services for four high-priority conditions: insulin-dependent diabetes, heart failure, sickle cell disease, and chronic pain. Ministry of Health NCD Programme Managers from across Africa (N = 47) were invited to participate in an online survey. Respondents we…
Measuring Women's Empowerment in the Global South
Over the past two decades, we have seen an explosion in research on the topic of women's empowerment and its related dimensions, yet there remains much to be done in terms of clarifying conceptual pathways and best practices in measurement. This review traces the intellectual and historic context in which women's status and empowerment in lower- and middle-income countries have been measured, the conceptual and operationalization challenges in sh…
The Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission
Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) strategic plans in low- and lower-middle income Sub-Saharan Africa
BACKGROUND: Global efforts to address NCDs focus primarily on 4-by-4 interventions - interventions to prevent and treat four groups of conditions affecting mainly older adults (some cardiovascular disease and cancers, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory disease) and four associated risk factors (alcohol, tobacco, poor diets, and physical inactivity). However, the NCD burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is composed of a more diverse set of conditi…
