  • Homonationalism, LGBT desaparecidos , and the politics of queer memory in Argentina

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti, Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Although homonationalism is a fundamental category in queer studies, it has never been used to understand the history of the Argentine lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender movement and the emergence of a hegemonic queer memory based on the self-representation of Argentina as a “European-like” and “white” nation that often claims to be different from “the rest” of Latin America. This article examines the history of the Argentine construction of whi…

  • Race And Politics In Peruvian And Argentine Porn Under The Transition To Democracy, 1975-1985

Santiago Joaquín Insausti, Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper examines the articulation of race, class, gender, and politics in erotic magazines during the Argentine and Peruvian destapes in the transition from dictatorial to democratic rule at the turn to the 1980s. We argue that porn, as a genre, was not limited to a niche of readers seeking to use the magazines only for erotic purposes. In Peru, porn was one of the main agents in the opposition to military rule, and it only became a separate, …

  • De asesinos a víctimas

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Revista Paginas•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Historical trends leading to the same-sex marriage law in Argentina1

Open Access•Pablo Ben, Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Cahiers des Amériques latines•2021•References: 20

This article analyzes the social transformations converging in “the revolution of LGBT rights” in Argentina. Unlike other short-term perspectives focusing on the strategies of LGBT organizations and on sudden and recent shifts in politics, our study concentrates on the historical transformations of varying length that established the conditions under which the struggle for same-sex marriage could succeed. Among other trends, we will analyze the c…

  • De chongos y mayates

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti, Máximo Javier Fernández•ARTICLE•Historia Crítica•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Objective/Context: In this research we analyze the change in heterosexual masculinities in Argentina and Mexico during the second half of the twentieth century with a special focus on working class men who, while playing the insertive role in sex with maricas, jotas and gays, still considered themselves and were perceived by their peers to be straight. The evidence shows that, although sex between maricas and young heterosexual men occurred frequ…

  • Hedonistas o revolucionarios? Política homosexual radical e izquierda trotskista en Argentina y Brasil (1967-1983)

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Mora•2020•Cited by: 2

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Revista Estudos Feministas•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 3

  • Dictatorial Rule and Sexual Politics in Argentina

Pablo Ben, Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 13

The Frente de Liberación Homosexual (FLH, 1967-1976) was the first political movement of homosexual men in Argentina. Despite its short life span, this organization set the ground for future developments. The FLH emerged in the context of increasing authoritarianism rather than being the result of a transition to democracy. The relationship with homophobic Peronists and left-wing traditions was, paradoxically, crucial for the emergence of the FLH…
