The Ecclesiology of Edmund Burke
Edmund Burke’s theological opinions have provoked considerable comment, in his own time and since. Although a range of interpretations have been offered, the current consensus amongst serious scholars is that Burke’s religious views could best be described as ‘latitudinarian.’ This article argues that the term ‘latitudinarian’ is too broad to adequately convey an accurate insight into Burke’s religious and ecclesiological doctrines. I seek to art…
Amateur Theatre Networks in the Archive
In ‘Amateur theatre networks in the archive’ David Coates describes how existing scholarship on pre-twentieth-century British amateur theatre consists of a series of microhistories. He explains that although these microhistories offer fascinating insights into amateur theatricals in particular environments, communities or societies, there is a lack of understanding of the relationship that each example has to one another. This, he suggests, could…
Flawed Capitalism
Drawing on over four decades of research and writing on the political economy of the UK and United States, David Coates offers a masterly account of the Anglo-American condition and the social and economic crisis besetting both countries. Charting the rise and fall of the social settlements that have shaped and defined the postwar years, Coates traces the history of the two economies through their New Deal and then their Reaganite periods - ones …
Reflections on the Future of the Left
Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon. Continental Drift
Given the nature of the United Kingdom’s immediate future in Europe, few books written about the past can be as timely as this one. As politicians, commentators, the academy, and the general public all struggle to understand why and how the United Kingdom has come to seek a divorce from the European Union (EU), they can only benefit from reading a book of this quality and length, one tracing the many twists and turns that characterize the relatio…
Varieties of Capitalism and ‘the Great Moderation’
When Peter Hall and David Soskice wrote their introduction to the now widely cited collection of essays they published in 2001 under the title Varieties of Capitalism: The Institutional Foundation of Comparative Advantage , they could hardly have known how important in the history of comparative political economy that introduction was going to be. True, they saw their own work as an important attempt to shift the goal posts — as ‘a new approach t…
America in the Shadow of Empires
The UK
This article adds a new element to the growing critique of the original varieties of capitalism (VoC) distinction between liberal and coordinated market capitalisms by questioning the usefulness of the liberal market economy (LME) category itself. It demonstrates that many of the distinguishing features of the LME category are - in the US and UK cases at least - best explained by those economies' external global and hegemonic role, rather than by…
Studying comparative capitalisms by going left and by going deeper
The article charts the continuing attempt to breathe fresh life into the original Hall and Soskice distinction between liberal market economies (LMEs) and coordinated market economies (CMEs). It surveys the critique of that original formulation from within the dominant 'varieties of capitalism' paradigm, and the recent attempt by Wolfgang Streeck to replace the LME-CME focus with a new institutionalist understanding of capitalism and its varietie…
Labour after New Labour
Overcoming the limits of the New Labour project requires both a re-examination of its strengths and weaknesses relative to those of Old Labour, and a serious reflection on the content of the Miliband–Poulantzas debate that established the international reputation of the present leader's father. From both sources, it is clear that this generation of Labour leaders need to turn party policy deliberately leftwards again, and to engage in a progressi…

Separating Sense from Nonsense in the US Debate on the Financial Meltdown
The US debate on the causes of the financial meltdown and the policies appropriate for its resolution have a different center of gravity to that prevalent in Western Europe. Free-market solutions continue to be canvassed by conservative and libertarian politicians and political commentators with an intensity that is rarely found elsewhere, reflecting the extent to which a significant minority of American voters and policy makers remain wedded to …

Using Learning Journeys to Develop a Challenging Curriculum for Gifted Children in a Nursery (Kindergarten) Setting
Recognising and nurturing giftedness in young children presents an important challenge to educators. This study sets out to identify and support gifted children through the provision of a rich learning environment in the Nursery (Kindergarten) setting. Practitioners in the Nursery aimed to provide cognitively challenging activities appropriate to childrenx2019;s needs. Learning Journeys (or stories) were developed as a way of recording and then r…

A Liberal Tool Kit
This handbook for the Democratic Left makes accessible to the general public strong liberal arguments on the key issues under debate as the 2008 presidential election approaches.
Capitalist flattening or flattening capitalism? class forces and political choices in the global knowledge economy
The global knowledge economy is new, but its central drivers are not. Capitalist logics continue to set its trajectory. The character and strength of class forces continue to determine its development and outcomes. As industrial conditions standardise globally and as trade flows thicken, the class compacts established in core capitalisms in the immediate post-war period are everywhere under challenge, and the task for the Left is clear: to create…

Welfare State Change
Welfare State Change: Towards a Third Way? Edited by Jane Lewis and Rebecca Surender. New York: Oxford University Press, 2004. 248p. $99.00 cloth, $35.00 paper. We do occasionally reach moments at which important bodies of academic scholarship have crystallized into a coherent shape, and at which the political practices to which they are addressed have been with us long enough to permit the construction of generalizations of value. Those are the …

Labour Parties and the State in Australia and the UK
During the Hawke-Keating period of federal government in Australia and under Blair in the UK both Labour Parties reset traditional understandings about the role and capacity of the state. State power is now exercised in a cultural context in which neo-liberal axioms largely prevail over social democratic ones. What impact did this context have in shaping policy in areas such as the national economy, social structure and political system? This art…
The Development of an Anglo-American Model of Trade Union and Political Party Relations
In this article we offer an historical and comparative view of trade union and political party relations in the United States and Great Britain. Using our own typology of union/party linkages, we trace the development of ties between the labor movements and politi cal parties in both countries from the beginning of the 20 th cen tury, when both labor movements turned to political action to gain relief from hostile court decisions; through the mid…
Varieties of Capitalism
Trajectories of Solidarity
This article analyses the linkage between trade unions and the US Democratic Party and the UK Labour Party in the twentieth century. A typology suited to longitudinal analysis of labour movement union-party linkages is proposed to help characterise and explain historical development of these two national movements through earlier types of linkage, into ‘New Labour’ and ‘New Democratic’ forms. The paper suggests that, from similar starting points,…

The Internal and External Face of New Labour's Political Economy
To Grasp Fully The Nature And Significance Of The Economic policies at the heart of dominant political projects, those policies have to be studied in the round. They have to be grasped as complex totalities which touch all aspects of the political agenda; and they have to be seen as constructed and contested wholes, whose contradictions, internal inconsistencies and conceptual limits are as vital to their trajectory as are their axioms, theories …
University Students' Expectations of Teaching
This study used a specially designed questionnaire to explore undergraduate students' expectations of and preferences in teaching, learning and assessment. A convenience sample of 395 first-year university undergraduates at the start of their university life was used. They were enrolled on a Medical, Business Studies or Psychology degree course at one of three British universities. Overall, the similarities in expectations and preferences between…
Capitalist Models and Social Democracy
Some of the more critical readings of the adequacy and effectiveness of New Labour in power have been developed by scholars willing to link arguments about the trajectory of Labour politics to wider arguments about the character of the contemporary global economy and the space within it for the construction and development of distinctive capitalist models. Mark Wickham-Jones and Colin Hay in particular have made that linkage in a series of import…
Models of Capitalism in the New World Order
In the debate over economic performance which has preoccupied UK policy makers for the last four decades, foreign ‘models' of more successful capitalisms elsewhere have been an important point of reference. Those models have been variously market-led (USA), state-led (Japan) or negotiated/consensual (Germany/Sweden). Of late the UK's own internal economic and social settlement has itself been offered as a viable model for once successful foreign …
The Early Childhood Home Inventory and Home-Short Form in Differing Racial/Ethnic Groups
In this article, we examine differences across three racial/ethnic groups in (a) the psychometric properties of the Early Childhood HOME Inventory and the HOME-Short Form and (b) the prediction of the two versions of the HOME Inventory to cognitive and behavioral outcomes among preschool children. Data are taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Supplement (NLSY-CS) and the Infant Health and Development Program (IHDP) sample. F…

Ecological problems associated with irrigation canals in the Sudan with particular reference to the spread of Bilharziasis, Malaria and Aquatic weeds and the Ameliorative role of fishes
Biological problems associated with irrigation canals in the Sudan are discussed. These problems are primarily the proliferation of aquatic weeds and the water‐borne vectors of the diseases bilharzia and malaria (i.e. snails and mosquito larvae, respectively). The differences in hydrobiological conditions between the natural source water and the water impounded within canals are fundamental to the understanding of the problems that arise. Ecologi…
Labourism and the Transition to Socialism
In New Left Review 126 Michael Rustin analysed the constitutional changes currently taking place in the Labour Party and suggested that they contained at least the potential for the transformation of that party into a serious vehicle for socialist advance. Though he was very critical of the narrowness
Space and Agency in the Transition to Socialism
It is now over a decade since John Saville’s survey of the Labour Party’s history led him to the view that ‘at least some things should become clearer as time moves along: that Labourism has nothing to do with Socialism: that the Labour Party has never been, nor
