Figures and Charts and Tables, Oh My: A Content Analysis of Textbook Data Visualizations
Textbooks offer instructors an opportunity to promote data visualization and statistical literacy throughout the sociology curriculum. In this study, we examined 463 data visualizations from 27 textbooks for Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and intermediate elective courses to illuminate the range of data visualizations and their use of statistical data and numerical variables. We find that textbooks rely on a narrow range of data visu…
How Do Sociologists Know What They Know? An Examination of Sociology Textbooks for Evidence of Sociological and Scientific Thinking
The American Sociological Association recommends that instructors and departments infuse research methods instruction throughout the curriculum (i.e., beyond research methods courses). Sociology textbooks are widely used instructional components and are essential to examine how research instruction extends beyond chapters and courses on research methods. The author uses qualitative content analysis of 27 textbooks for introductory courses ( n = 1…
Gaining Confidence, Experience, and Knowledge as Researchers among Undergraduate Sociology Students
Advanced undergraduate students struggle with executing complete research projects that involve data collection and analysis. Research indicates that engaging in undergraduate research is a high-impact practice. The American Sociological Association recommends that sociology majors engage in research beyond their research methods and statistics courses. We used a pre-/post-assessment model across three semesters in all upper-level undergraduate s…
North Central Sociological Association 2020 John F. Schnabel Lecture Missed Opportunities: Developing Undergraduate Students Sociological Research Skills Throughout the Curriculum
Undergraduate sociology students need more opportunities to develop their research skills while earning their degree. However, a common reaction to this assertion is that there simply is not enough time to provide students with hands-on experience doing sociology while also ensuring that “all the material” is covered in elective courses. Therefore, much of the burden of helping students develop their sociological research skills occurs in isolate…
Online Somatic Work: The Case of Sensory Processing Disorder
This study examines how people affected by sensory processing disorder (SPD) make their sensory experience visible and meaningful in their unprompted public blog-writing. I analyzed 66 online narratives written by 44 people affected by SPD. The non-normative sensory responses of people with SPD are invisible but may result in socially disapproved and challenging behavior (e.g., extreme picky eating). Minimal social and medical recognition of this…
Using Facebook Secret Groups for Qualitative Data Collection
The popularity of Facebook (FB) has led researchers to seek ways of using the social media platform in their empirical research. One approach is to use FB’s secret groups tool to conduct asynchronous online focus groups. In this research note, I outline the steps to using FB secret groups along with the strengths and weaknesses of this approach. I used FB’s secret groups function to conduct three asynchronous online focus groups. I recruited care…
Tell Something About the Pictures: The Content and the Process of Autobiographical Work Among Scrapbookers
Viewing the popular process of making 'scrapbooks' as a particular type of autobiographical occasion, I analyze interviews with scrapbookers and others who make up the scrapbooker's community, including industry workers and biographical others (i.e., family and friends). By considering scrapbooks within the autobiographical community in which they are created, I am able to scrutinize the structure of the narratives they contain, the role of the a…

High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Providing Girls Opportunities to Participate in Sport
In light of the increasing participation of girls/women in sport, we investigate the attitudes of high school boys and girls toward potential increased opportunities for girls’ to participate in sport. There has been little research on high school students’ attitudes toward girls’ sport participation decomposed by gender and athletic status. We find that, on average, high school students are supportive of increased opportunities for girls to part…
Consuming contraceptive control: Gendered distinctions in web-based contraceptive advertising
There are over a hundred contraceptives currently on the market in the USA. In this paper, we present a discourse analysis of the stand-alone websites for 43 contraceptives in an effort to understand what contraceptive manufacturers are selling consumers along with their products. Manufacturers tailor marketing messages to promote conventional sex and gender norms using a scientific discourse. In particular, these products appropriate feminist id…
