Against book enclosures
Matthew Gandy's Commentary in Area (2023) criticised the decision of the national funder UKRI to mandate that all books resulting from the research that it funds must be published open access (OA) from 2024. This raises many issues of importance to geographers. We argue that scholars in the discipline need to fight for affordable and ethically produced OA books, not ‘legacy’ modes of publishing. In particular, books produced by scholar‐led OA pre…
Running and Reading Remnant Danwei Walls in China's Postsocialist City
Built on visual and running/walking ethnography, this article analyzes visual traces left on remnant danwei walls in postsocialist China. The article considers danwei walls as yiji (remnant traces) that serve as loci of political memory and as a medium to host other visual traces by a variety of different actors. Drawing on a range of concepts from cultural studies and visual ethnography, the article provides a close reading of these traces, trea…

Chinese Discourses on Happiness
Chinese Discourses on Happiness
Contemporary Chinese voices approach the topic of happiness from many diverse positions and perspectives. Happiness, often represented by the Chinese character fu 福 , is part of the visual propaganda campaign of the Chinese Dream, and raising levels of happiness has become an official government target. Much is written and said about happiness by the Chinese government, but also by authors of self-help books, by journalists, TV chat show hosts, p…
The Politics of Protestant Churches and the Party-State in China. God Above Party? By Carsten T. Vala
In this study on the relationship between Protestant Christian groups and the state in contemporary China, Carsten Vala focuses on three sets of questions: the role played by official Protestant organizations and churches; the spread and survival of unregistered groups; and the seemingly selective suppression of Protestant churches. Vala’s data is derived from fifteen months of fieldwork (interviews) conducted between 2002 and 2014 in a number of…
Christian Values in Communist China
This book argues that as new political and social values are formed in post-socialist China, Christian values are becoming increasingly embedded in the new post-socialist Chinese outlook. It shows how although Christianity is viewed in China as a foreign religion, promoted by Christian missionaries and as such at odds with the official position of the state, Christianity as a source of social and political values - rather than a faith requiring a…
Beyond Repression and Resistance—christian Love and China's Harmonious Society
This article looks at Christianity as an official source of morality in contemporary. Specifically, this article examines the role of love as a social force in today's China with particular focus on the role of "love" as a motivational force in social reconstruction and welfare work. It argues that the use of the term in the discourse on the Harmonious Society in general and in the context of charitable work in particular, despite the official em…

Bridging the Gap? An investigation of Beijing intellectual house church activities and their implications for China's democratization
This article investigates the link between Christian belief and the fight for political change in today's China focusing on the activities of certain Beijing house churches. It formulates the hypothesis that Chinese Christian intellectuals may be able to fulfil a special 'bridge-function' in Chinese society. This hypothesis is tested against evidence based on a close reading of two Beijing house church publications (Aiyan and Fangzhou) and interv…
