Care-giver wellbeing
The three-way intersection of gender, relationship-to-care-recipient and care-giving demands has not, to our knowledge, been examined in relation to the wellbeing of family care-givers. We explore inequalities in depressive symptoms and life satisfaction, comparing wives, husbands, daughters and sons providing very-intensive care (36+ hours/week) with those providing less care and disparities between these groups in the factors related to disadva…
The Older, the Happier
The “paradox of aging” refers to the phenomenon that even though people’s physical health and functions may decline when they enter later adulthood, their happiness does not necessarily. Previous studies have shown that older adults’ better emotional regulation skills may contribute to the maintenance of their happiness. This study aims to examine the relationship between age, health, and happiness, and the moderating role of emotional stability.…

Relocation and Social Support Among Older Adults in Rural China
Relocation has negative implications for the number of social support resources perceived to be available by older adults in rural China. China will need to come to terms with how to provide for the instrumental support needs of an aging society
A typology of care-giving across neurodegenerative diseases presenting with dementia
The purpose of this study is to develop and extend our understanding of dementia care-giving by introducing a typology of informal care-giving across four different diseases. Care-giving factors were examined with respect to specific dementia presentation in mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease-associated dementia. Informal care-giving literature in the four diseases was systematically …
Filial responsibility
This paper examines the relationship between attitudes of filial responsibility and five different types of care-giving behaviours to parents among three cultural groups. It does so within an assessment of the relative importance of cultural versus structural factors for care-giving behaviours. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 100 Caucasian-Canadians, 90 Chinese-Canadians and 125 Hong Kong-Chinese. Multiple regression analyses assessed…
Aging and Late-Life Depression
The relationship between age and late-life depression is complex, and it depends on how the dependent variable is measured. Late-life depression develops through a different set of risk factors than it does in earlier stages of the life course. The "fourth age" appears to be a period of psychiatric morbidity

Power Dynamics and Perceptions of Neighbourhood Attachment and Involvement
This article explores neighbourhood attachment and involvement by comparing qualitative and quantitative data drawn from the same urban health promotion research project in Canada. Comments by community leaders in qualitative interviews linked increased attachment and involvement with the presence of greater numbers of home owners and greater length of residency of neighbourhood members. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses of a large s…

Ways of Aging (review)
Reviewed by: Ways of Aging Neena L. Chappell Jaber F. Gubrium and James A. Holstein , ed. Ways of Aging. Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishing, 2003, 229 pp. The stated intent of this volume is to illustrate the diverse and multifaceted experiences of aging in order to begin countering the categorization and stereotyping of "old" and old age. This is necessary, the editors argue, in order to offset the homogenizing effects of categorization, to help u…
Lay perceptions of neighbourhood health
While research has focused on objective indicators of community health, less attention has been paid to subjective indicators. Lay perceptions of neighbourhood health are explored in the present research through the analysis of survey data from 918 middle-aged individuals in Victoria, Canada. Socio-demographic variables, including neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES), were included in a binary logistic regression model, along with health stat…

Elderly Chinese in Pacific Rim Countries
With longer life expectancy, most countries are now experiencing rapid ageing among their populations. Ethnic Chinese populations are no exception to these demographic transformations. During the twentieth century, there has been a wide dispersion of Chinese people throughout the world, as well as dramatic socio-political changes within China. These unique factors have strained traditional filial norms and necessitated a re-examination of interge…

Dimensions of Care for Dementia Sufferers in Long-Term Care Institutions
This Canadian research can be added to the few but growing number of rigorous studies that suggest SCUs are not homogeneous and do not necessarily provide better care than non-SCUs. Moreover, it raises questions about the benefits of "best practice" dimensions of care, regardless of SCU status

Informal and Formal Care
Although several authors have speculated about the type of relationship between informal and formal care, relatively little empirical work directly examines the interface between the two support systems. This paper examines the correlates of using neither system, only one system and several combinations of both systems. It explores the characteristics of those who do and do not make complementary use of both systems and under what circumstances t…

Mobility Restriction and the Use of Devices among Seniors
A growing population of seniors in North America, coupled with increasing life expectancies, means there will likely be increased future demand for products to alleviate mobility problems commonly faced by elders. Although past research has documented the prevalence of mobility restriction among elderly populations, and the tendency of some to seek personal assistance to alleviate their difficulties, there is little research that looks at the use…
Old and Female
A double jeopardy hypothesis argues that the combined negative effects of occupying two stigmatized statuses are greater than occupying either status alone. Applying this framework to elderly persons, it can be argued that being female and “old” elderly has more negative consequences than being male and “old” elderly, male and “young” elderly or female and “young” elderly. An empirical test of this hypothesis, using both an objective (mental heal…
Health and Helping among the Elderly
This article compares helping networks of men and women for four different illness situations among a random sample of elderly individuals aged 60 and over living in an urban center on the Canadian Prairies (N = 743). Helping networks vary depending on the illness situation. Gender differences are also evident in helping networks, reflecting gender differences in overall interaction patterns. Men are more likely to receive assistance from spouses…

Self-Care in Relation to Informal and Formal Care
This paper examines the prevalence, inter-relationships and correlates of various forms of self, informal and formal care. Analyses of data drawn from a random sample of 743 non-institutionalised elderly individuals living in Winnipeg, Manitoba reveal similarities as well as differences among the three types of care. Self- and formal care are somewhat similar, being positively related and having similar correlates. Nevertheless, substitutability …

Awareness of Death in the Disengagement Theory
Awareness of death in the disengagement theory of aging is the variable purported to trigger the disengagement process. In this paper the literature is reviewed for a conceptualization of this variable. Two components of awareness of death emerge: the knowledge of impending death and the meaning that this knowledge has for the individual's future. The empirical literature is then reviewed for a clarification of these components and to examine the…
Paid Labor
This article elaborates a conceptual distinction between commitment to and identification with paid labor. The distinction is derived from the different definitions evident in the literature, the different indicators used to measure them, and the logical possibility of being committed to work but not identifying with the work. The results of a study designed to test this distinction empirically among a sample of working women are presented. They …
Multivariate analysis of qualitative data

Social Integration and Caregiving among Seniors in Bermuda
This paper examines social interaction among seniors in Bermuda, the relationship of various interaction variables with psychological or emotional well-being, and caregiving. The data come from the first ever social science survey conducted among seniors in this country. The findings are compared with selected industrialised countries. Bermudian seniors have strong social ties, somewhat stronger than have been reported in other developed nations.…
The future of health care in Canada
Canada, like all industrialised countries, has become concerned over health care costs. Canada has reason to be concerned, with the most expensive system, on a per capita basis, of any country with national health insurance. This paper briefly reviews Canada's health care system, examines the rhetoric being adopted throughout the country at the current time, and discusses the changes which are now occurring. An assessment of whether change will l…
