Cultural Dynamics of Civic Action in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, 1967-1968
From 1966 to 1968 the 4th U.S. Infantry Division operated in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, where the indigenous population consisted primarily of Montagnard tribesmen with near-Neolithic cultures living in the countryside, and secondarily of a ruling group of Vietnamese living in the cities and a few villages. Personnel of the 4th Division conducted civic action programs among the Montagnards and the Vietnamese for the purpose of enhancing th…

Stress and Psychological Readiness in Post-Cold War Operations
Soldiers and Marines at Chosin Reservoir
In Korea in 1950 all of the commanders of the U.S. Marine Division and its regiments had commanded units in combat during World War II, but 79% of the commanders of U.S. Army divisions and regiments had no such experience. Both Marine and Army personnel in the Chosin Reservoir campaign up through the rank of major had combat experience and performed creditably. The experienced senior Marine commanders extricated all of their men and most of their…
Commanders' Priorities and Psychological Readiness
This is a report on a secondary analysis of survey data to assess relationships between commanders' priorities and the psychological readiness of their units. The data were taken from two unrelated surveys - one of U.S. Army company commanders and the other of soldiers in those officers' units. Results indicated that almost all commanders put the highest priority on development of combat skills. Soldiers in units commanded by officers who also ac…
Governmental Policy and Combat Effectiveness
French governmental policy and legislation between the world wars had unintended effects on the morale and efficiency of military officers. The second-order effects were progression of officers' morale from psychological autonomy toward dependency. These effects can be discerned from an analysis of articles in military journals between 1920 and 1940. The third-order effects were on efficiency. They included the officers' growing inability to coop…
Combat Leadership Styles
Recent research suggests that trusting and empowering subordinates is more likely to lead to success in combat than the traditional authoritarian mode of structuring relationships within a military hierarchy. My purpose in this article is to step back from contemporary research and experience into recent history to see if empowerment is just a fresh cliche, or a principle of leadership with a record that can stand up to scrutiny. I have selected …
The Gap Between Leadership Policy and Practice
In spite of the rapid socio-cultural evolution that has taken place in the United States since its birth as a nation, there has been consistency in US Army policy with respect to leadership. Modern research in the military and social sciences has confirmed the psychological and military validity of the leadership philosophy prescribed by current Army regulations as well as those dating back to the late 18th century. But military leaders have demo…
